Actually Onya, have you heard The BFG? Lots of that sounds like Lost In Space. In that there are instruments? It's hard to hear the opening and closing of the Overture and not hear "Lost in Space" (though much of the score diverges from that sound, yes). Crazy, I had never made that connection. It's still a stretch for me, but maybe I'm listening to the wrong notes (it's in the flutes, right?).

I'm going to chime in here, because I've lived through the soundtracks of the sixties up to the present and have opinions. So this is my opinion, and I speak only for me. John Williams is a great film composer and undoubtedly the most popular. His scores for the Star Wars films, Harry Potter, Superman, Indiana Jones, E.T., and so on are generally perfect for those films and I don't think anybody could have done them any better. But, apart from the films, I don't enjoy those scores as much. There are two reasons. One: Generally, in his more popular films, Williams favors a more energetic, busy sort of a neo-Korngold approach that doesn't get me emotionally. Two: Most of those films are family entertainment. Very well done, but family entertainment. I started thinking about my favorite scores, and most if not all of them deal with adults and adult themes: The Ghost and Mrs Muir, To Kill a Mockingbird, Chinatown, The Lion in Winter, In Cold Blood, La Dolce Vita, Once Upon a Time in the West, Cool Hand Luke, and so on. I love John Barry, and his better scores are for films like Midnight Cowboy, The Last Valley, Walkabout, The Whisperers, Body Heat, Dances With Wolves, Out of Africa, and so on. So for me it's just a preference in style, approach, and choice of film. My favorite Williams scores, by the way, are Jane Eyre, The Reivers, The Long Goodbye, Images, The Fury, Schindler's List, and Close Encounters.

There are plenty of “adult” scores by Williams that should more than float your non-popcorn boat.
