Wow.

Never realized he was actually 15 years older than his brother Lionel.

Makes me wonder if he would have been spry enough to attend the Oscars this weekend, or if 89-year old Marilyn Monroe would have accepted his statuette on his behalf.

The dissertation that Fred Steiner wrote at USC about Alfred Newman's early career (until 1939) says that Newman actually was born in 1900, not 1901, but that Newman never bothered to correct the "record." So we're actually approaching the 115th anniversary of Newman's birth.

And I wonder what kind of music he would have composed for today's films.

Someone should celebrate Newmans birth by releasing the uncut Diary of Anne Frank.

He was a superb composer whose style evolved with changing times. Listen to the music in Wuthering Heights and then listen to the opening credits in Airport, and you can see how he changed his musical style. In both cases, he never lost track of what it meant to compose excellent music.

Yes: 115 (born in 1900). That error, although corrected decades ago, persists in so many references, both old and recent. Perhaps adjust the title of this thread?
