I grew up with Christopher Reeve being my Superman. And he is Superman as far as I'm concerned.

With that in mind...I've watched Man Of Steel a few times over the last few weeks. Ignoring story etc etc....just to see how Henry plays the big S.

I have to say....I'm growing fond of his interpretation of Superman.

I'm curious as to how others feel about it. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how it works in Batman v Superman.

So...Is Henry the new Superman??

Not for me—At least not yet. I am glad that Man of Steel was different from the other Superman movies since variety is the spice of life and all that. Will wait and see what comes of the Man of Steel sequels.

I know this is sacrilegious but I was never all that fond of Christopher Reeves as Superman. Though I like the film a lot. I thought he put in a better performance as Clark Kent. For me George Reeves will always be my idol Superman.

I was a huge fan of Chris Reeves' portrayal of both Supes and Clark Kent so it's always been a little difficult to judge subsequent actors objectively.

But even at my most impartial I really didn't like Cavill's performance in Man of Steel, nor did I like the movie.

That said, both Cavill's and Zack Snyder's movie were infinitely preferable to the utterly loathesome Superman Returns. In fairness to Brandon Routh's portrayal, Bryan Singer's movie was so poorly written and directed that he simply didn't have the material to shine with so it is difficult to compare him to Cavill.

At the end of the day, neither Cavill or Routh come close to the level of sincerity and deftness of touch that Reeves brought to his remarkable interpretation of Superman.

I always liked Reeves. I first noticed Cavill in The Tudors, and thought he was very good.
I felt he'd make a great Superman. I found it hard to judge his performance in Superman because I thought the movie was really bad and very boring, not because of his performance, but because of the bloated, overlong script. He has another chance with the Superman/Batman movie, and I just hope it will be a decent movie.

I agree. It was hard to appreciate Cavill as Superman since he was trapped in a horrible movie, easily the worst Superman movie to date. And no, I haven't forgotten the 3rd or 4th movies big grin Man Of Steel was just awful.

My fear is Batman/Superman will be more of the "ohh we're so serious and dark" thing, so it isn't promising so far, but still is way too early to know anything at all.

MikeP, great minds think alike. smile

I am still wondering how Batman and Superman can make a team, but I won't make any judgment until the movie opens.

Bats and Supes have a long history as a team:

I'd agree with this.

i didn't like Man of Steel at all when I first saw it and so my opinion of Cavill as Superman was not great. But since then I have watched the movie a number of times..... and it must be growing on me...as is Cavill.

I guess knowing sketchy details of Bats vs Supes makes things that happened in the first film make more sense.

I thought Christopher Reeve made a very good Clark Kent, but that Cavill brought more of an other-world quality to Superman. The feeling of being an alien rather than an American with super powers.

Brandon Routh was a slight misfire for me but is very good as Ray Palmer in Arrow. Mind you, he has the enormous benefit of sharing most of his scenes with Felicity.

TG, my son Rob will be VERY impressed that you watch Arrow, he is a huge fan of the show. I've never been able to get into it myself, despite Rob's constant efforts to force me to watch the Blu Rays.

Routh seemed to have caught a fair amount of flack for "channeling" Reeve in his Superman performance, and he sure did sound like Reeve. But for me he did a fine job of being both Kent and Superman, bringing emotion and heart to a mixed bag movie.

Cavill played Superman as best he could , given his film's overall tone, which was not about heart and soul, but about being epic and dark and awesome.

Finally caught up with MAN OF STEEL on video.

Hated the movie, which was more bombast than anything else, but enjoyed Cavill's performance.

(One thing I wondered about, though. In the old Superman comics, whenever anyone tried to cut his hair, the scissors would break, because he's invulnerable. Yet Cavill seemed to be able to grow a beard, and shave, routinely, and this was never an issue. I guess Jor-El included a Krypton shaver in little Kal-el's toilet kit....)

That's me, dahn wiv da kidz. I keep up with Arrow, Flash And Gotham. All have their good points and Arrow has so far been able to keep it fairly fresh but I don't know for how much longer. Me old pal Vinnie Jones is an asset as well but the Laurel Lance story development is getting a bit stale.

Flash was my childhood favourite so I'm sticking with it, but all the characters seem terribly pleased with themselves and the setbacks they suffer are overcome with a grin and an unlikely invention.

Gotham is really enjoyable and for me has hardly any weaknesses up to this point.

Sorry, all a bit off topic.

The comics have actually addressed this. One explanation is that Clark has a reflective piece of metal from the ship he traveled to Earth in, and he uses this to reflect his heat vision on to his face and burn his whiskers. Of course the character has been rebooted since then, and it has been a while since I read Superman comics, so there may be another more current explanation out there.

Bud Collyer: iconic voice of Superman for years, on radio and later the Filmation cartoon.

Kirk Alyn: I never saw him beyond tiny clips, so I can't say. But probably wouldn't be my favorite.

George Reeves was the perfect Superman for kids and I still think he's fantastic. I just love the guy. He embodied a kind, fatherly concept of Superman and leapt right into the hearts of children everywhere.

Christopher Reeve was close to perfect, and help from John Williams elevates this version to another level.

Dean Cain played Clark as the main guy, and Superman was basically Clark in tights Still very good. LOIS & CLARK dvd sets are quite affordable right now.

Tom Welling was good in SMALLVILLE, but he really didn't get to play Superman, and anyway it was the women who shined. Kristin Kreuk, Allison Mack, Annette O'Toole, Erica Durance, and Cassidy Freeman were all sensational. They were always the main reason I watched. I still find Cassidy Freeman absolutely arresting on this show.

Brandon Routh was good in SUPERMAN RETURNS, but the script takes a wrong turn, and Lois Lane was badly miscast (the bland actress was a personal friend of Kevin Spacey). Still a good film when you take into account the music and the big aircraft scene near the beginning-- but that should have been the film's climax. The whole "crystalline continent" thing did not work.

Henry Cavill was okay in MAN OF STEEL; I got the feeling he was cast mainly for his bodybuilder physique, but he he pulled it off. They got a good Lois Lane this time in Amy Adams. But plot-wise, the film itself went even further wrong than SUPERMAN RETURNS.

It would be impossible for me to disagree with you any more than I do right now. But that's OK. We ALL disagree here, don't we? I think SUPERMAN RETURNS is an amazing piece of work, and the BEST Superman film to date.

I think SUPERMAN RETURNS is an amazing piece of work, and the BEST Superman film to date.

Quite how you can rate "......Returns" as better than "....The Movie" is completely beyond me.....it's not that I hate "....Returns", far from it - aside from the odd misstep along the way, some silly CGI, and a miscast Lois it's superb entertainment....and Routh is just great....but better than Reeve's first outing? Not on your nelly.....but, I've said it before and will say it again....it would be a boring world if we all had the same tastes....

I like Cavill.....his portrayal is one of the main reasons for me that the movie has rewatch value....I have problems with the movie and the ridiculously overblown final act, but Cavill's Superman has heart....and his Clark Kent (so far) is the Clark that these movies need...Man of Steel is just fine (mostly)....and yes, I do quite like the score.
