Regards

I believe that the stereo editions of THE BIG COUNTRY are rechanneled mono.

There were many - not just on UA. Another one is "Some Like It Hot" - the official CD versions of it sound awful. I wonder if the score was ever recorded in stereo - the source for stereo pressings for sure weren't multi-channel masters...

On the other hand, there are many early sixties UA recordings that sound great. It's sad, for instance, that the LP suite of "The Misfits" has not been re-issued officially thus far. The stereo recording is not without problems, but for sure would make a nice addition to the complete score (which seems to be no longer extant in stereo)...

KING OF HEARTS stereo LP was just in mono...though the French 45 included some stereo tracks...

The big questions of course is: who will re-issue the remaining UA LPs? "Jessica", "Young Billy Young" and "Buona Sera Mrs. Campbell". It's unbelievable that they haven't been done by now - especially the last one.

Add to that extended editions of the Billy Wilder titles like "Irma La Douce" and "Some Like It Hot" frown

Although it's now hard to find, "Jessica" (Mario Nascimbene) was released on Japan's Avantz label (SP/CR-20050; UPC 4-512107-000822) in December, 2009.

Other UA LPs never released on CD:

Citizen Kane [Leroy Holmes performance] (Bernard Herrmann)
Convoy (various country)
8 On the Lam (George Romanis)
I’ll Take Sweden (Jimmie Haskell)
If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (Walter Scharf)
Joyride (Jimmie Haskell, Barry Mann)
King Kong [Leroy Holmes performance] (Max Steiner)
The Landlord (Al Cooper)
McLintock! (Frank DeVol)
Modern Times [gray market CD and download only] (Charles Chaplin)
The Music Lovers (Tchaikovsky)
Namu, the Killer Whale (Samuel Matlovsky)
Of Human Bondage [1964] (Ron Goodwin, other themes and composers)
Paris Holiday (Joseph J. Lilley)
The Penthouse [Harkit only] (John Hawksworth)
The Prisoner of Zenda [1937] [Leroy Holmes performance] (Alfred Newman)
Return to Macon County (Robert O. Ragland, various pop)
Revolution [1968] (various rock)
Salt and Pepper (John Dankworth)
Silent Movie (John Morris)
The Spook Who Sat by the Door (Herbie Hancock)
A Star Is Born [1937, Leroy Holmes performance] (Max Steiner)

Out of that lot, I'd take Frank DeVol's, McLintock! I suppose the original score is long gone, I have no idea who now owns the LP now, or even if the LP tapes are still around.

That Japanese "Jessica" release is a (unautzorized?) LP rip. No?

Similarly all Leroy Holmes recordings but "King Kong" have been released by various labels in Europe. They obviously thought that these were the origninal recordings and thus in the public domain. The same goes for Elmer Bernstein's UA re-recording of "The Ten Commandments".

I'm usually a completist, but the lack of official re-issues of the Leory Holmes recordings really isn't a miss.

Those four Leroy Holmes' recordings (Kong, Kane, Zenda, Star) are four pieces of trash. I bought them when they came out in the early 70s, have not played them since. I hope junk like this NEVER is issued on CDs. They are an insult to Steiner, Herrmann and Newman.
