Hello everybody,
Excuse my ignorance, but I have been listening to this version of Rózsa's Ben-Hur fanfare and overture during the last couple of days and I have no idea what recording/album it belongs to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcZg8nt3J-4
Anybody know where to get this recording? It is truly fantastic.
Thanks a bunch!

Alex

Fantastic, indeed. It's from his 1977 re-recording with the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Glad you like it, Alex. One place to get it is here: http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=490266

Alex, that's Rozsa's re-recording of Ben-Hur cues that he did around 1976 for the Decca label (It's also been re-issued again more recently on another label..sorry, I can't think of the label at the moment).

It might be better to get this re-release of that Ben-Hur recording, which is paired with Rozsa's equally-excellent re-recording of Quo Vadis.

The old mind's ear says naw hway. I played that Decca album for decades and that ain't how it sounds. Slower tempo, for starters. Someone has mentioned another and that must be the one. Still, I like the Decca better!

That is the Rozsa re recording released originally on a Decca Phase 4 recording, then re released on a 2 CD album with Rozsa's Decca Phase 4 rerecording of Quo Vadis. It was then reissued on a Decca Eloquence album, and is also included in the new Decca Phase 4 40 CD package. This is the best recording of music from Ben Hur, by far. It contains all of the best music in an extended suite without being redundant, and the sound is sensational.

Sorry, hardly the BEST rerecording of Ben Hur and certainly, it is NOT in suite form, but individual tracks and pieces.

It's the best RE-recording and conducted by MR himself.

It's also technically a suite, that's what a suite is, as in Holst's 'Planets' suite.

The old mind's ear's playing tricks on you again. It's the Decca NPO from either the Dutton/Vocalion release, or the Decca Eloquence.

Well, the mind's ear is correct but my labeling wasn't. Just pulled out the album and it's MGM. Performer is "Symphony Orchestra of Rome conducted by Carlo Savina" with "Notes by Miklos Rozsa."

By that definition, pretty much every release of a film score that isn't "C&C" is a 'suite'.

Just did an A/B comparison between the video and my Vocalion copy of the Rozsa Decca Phase-4 recording: they're definitely one and the same. I'm not sure how that can be up for debate.

It's my favorite version of the score as well. The full score is too repetitive for my tastes, but the suite is just right. And it doesn't hurt that it's paired with an equally tasteful suite from "Quo Vadis."

No. Rozsa adapted the pieces specially for album. Some are revisions of the previous pieces he adapted for the MGM albums, others are taken from the OST scores. The 'Miracle and Finale' is taken from a rejected version of the finale which was composed and is on the sheets, but was never recorded.

The terminology is from the concert hall. It has nothing to do with film score buff terminology.

The album is an effective sixth disc to accompany the FSM, given that it has new alternatives. Those present at the sessions report that another cue, the 'Anno Domini' was to start the album, but was left off for some reason. It was recorded though.

Thank you guys, I just ordered the CD.
Now that we're at it, is there a way to get hold of the conductor's score for this piece? I'm dying to study it!

Really? Assuming you're not Thor in disguise, I'd be interested to hear which parts you find repetitive.
