Renowned French composer Gérard Calvi died last friday in Paris. He was 92 (born in Paris in 1922).
His career was successful and prolific from the 50s to the early 80s.
A former president of the SACEM (french equivalent of ASCAP or BMI) he was very active in securing musician's rights over the years.
He was close friends with the late Georges Delerue, sharing the same flat in Paris when they were young student composers.
Among his credits are :
Asterix le Gaulois, Asterix et Cléôpatre, Les Douze Travaux d'Asterix. Le Viager (directed by longtime friend and collaborator Pierre Tchernia), most of the Robert Dhéry movies (Le Petit Baigneur, Branquignol, La Belle Américaine and Allez France! (both co-directed with Tchernia), and la Tulipe Noire, among many others.

Calvi is mainly known to have scored all the Asterix cartoon films by the Asterix' creators' (in the Sixties and Seventies), before Cosma. Thanks to his friendship with director Pierre Tchernia, also co-scenarist of these Asterix. He scored all the Tchernia's other films, featuring real actors.
His specialisation in comedies and light films didn't allow him to be honored and to have a long and dense career. A period is disappearing. I didn't believ he was so old.
