Michael Small scored most of Pakula's films. 7 out of 16 directed by Pakula.
Marvin Hamlisch did score SOPHIE'S CHOICE in 1982 and the last two Pakula directed films were THE PELICAN BRIEF and THE DEVIL'S OWN both scored by James Horner.
Wonder if Small was just not available for these films? Did the two frequent collaborators have a falling out? Just curious if anyone knows more.
PRESUMED INNOCENT was also a non-Small score and there John Williams took the pen and baton.

I don`t know if they had a fallout or not but I do know that sometimes the producers decides over the director who`s scoring the picture. If I am not mistaken Jerry Goldsmith scored Dennis The Menace because John Hughes wanted to work with him and Hughes was not the director. Nick Castle who directed it usually hires Craig Safan. Or take The Ghost and The Darkness. I think it was producer Michael Douglas who wanted Goldsmith.
Don't know nothin' about no fallout either, zoobs, but I can say that we agree on our fave Small for a Pakula movie...
Mine is also COMES A HORSEMAN, as a fully satisfying listen on CD... although there are some tremendously great bits in both KLUTE (the bittersweet Love Theme) and THE PARALLAX VIEW (the totally awesome "Parallax Test").
Regarding non-Small Pakulas, that Hamlisch theme from SOPHIE'S CHOICE does seem to have a kind of Smallesque twist to it... something in the phrasing that makes it slightly unconventional, while still being conventional.
Oddly enough, of the eight scores composed by Michael Small for Alan J Pakula, only half of them have been issued on CD. Rollover (1981), Dream Lover (1986), Orphans (1987) and See You in the Morning (1989) remain unreleased.
Consenting Adults is a great Michael Small score.
