Man oh man, I just watched THE TIME MACHINE again. What a great score! Even as a kid back in the '60s I loved this music, but I just watched the movie again, and I have to say, what a fantastic score! It's really a shame that Garcia didn't do more movies. I know he did a lot of TV, and also did George Pal's ATLANTIS, THE LOST CONTINENT, but the man really seemed to miss his calling.

A terrific composer and a very warm person. I wish I had talked to him more than that one email, but I didn't want to fawn too much over the man. Love those two scores he did that FSM put out.

Think I have to pull Atlantis off the shelf for tomorrow's commute.

I became good friends with "Unkl Russ" and he would send people to me for copies of FANTASTICA on CDR (before it was officially released) for several years. We spoke on the phone a bunch...and he even liked MY CDs(!). I made him a DVD of all my Youtube FANTASTICA videos before he passed....which he called "genius"....LOL. THE TIME MACHINE FSM CD is a treasure. Miss you, Unk.

Ah yes, Mr. Thaxton, we've discussed the love for this one many times. Can't top what I said below and probably a cazillion other places, but if I've seen it 500 times it's still too few. The Filby scenes really hit me as a kid and have stayed all the way. Caught it on TCM on their Rod Taylor tribute recently. Finally saw it on the big screen in a Manhattan revival like 25 or 30 years ago and the color, oh the color.

The film has had a special place in my heart since first seeing it.

FSM, let's not forget, did a proper job of presenting this score. In fact, they did just about exactly the same thing with The Twilight Zone movie. The full score comes first followed by variations and special edits.

And yes, I love the score too.

I must echo your collective enthusiasm here. I'd dithered over the FSM release for years ("Oh, I've got the old LP; oh, so many other things to get; oh, I'm a bit tight-fisted anyway, and not even a manic collector; oh woe", etc), but I got it - finally - at Christmas, and it's indeed fabulous and wonderful.

And it's so evocative of the film. I think the film itself hit a nerve with a lot of us at a certain age, and the music became very much inseparable from the movie. I caught up with the film again on DVD a few years ago, and it's still a great piece of fantasy cinema - and of course that score...

Many films could exist virtually unchanged with a newly tacked-on score. THE TIME MACHINE on the other hand just seems so perfect a film with the Garcia soundtrack, and as a soundtrack it can't help but conjure up images of the film. I can usually make up my own images in my head when listening to soundtracks, but with this one I can only "see" Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux (yum) and the Morlocks (yuck).

It would be interesting to hear what people who haven't seen the film think of the CD release.

Howard, I'll thank you not to remind me that I'm older than you, old enough to have seen the film in color in a theater the first time I saw it -- because it was the initial release.

The main theme for the traveler and Filby's theme are quite arresting. This is a wonderful score.

The FSM release is the way to go with this title. I never liked the sound of the GNP Crescendo CD.
