I, too, was happily blown away. That said, I've been gradually warming to this performer for quite a while now now. For the longest time, I only knew her from pictures in the media, a walking gimmick who changed every day from one outrageous costume -- nor no costume at all -- every day, and let it go at that. Eventually, however, I flipped channels and came across a couple of songs in one of her concerts on HBO, and was surprised to discover that I actually liked some of what I was hearing, and sensed she had a genuine musicality I rarely encounter in contemporary pop music. (i.e., almost never.) And then she sealed the deal by teaming up with Tony Bennett. (He painted her portrait in Vanity Fair magazine long before they recorded their album together.) So, you might say the Oscars medley was the logical extension of my growing appreciation of her talents.

Here's hoping she can continue to grow and flourish, and maybe even some day leave all the extraneous extramusical trappings behind her. God knows, she's got the pipes.

I've always liked her, so this was another example of that.

When I first saw her, I thought all of her costume trappings and her name were rather silly. However, I really liked her songs, and I always thought her voice was very good. And now we know that she really can sing beautifully.

I would have preferred if she teamed up with someone who can actually sing instead of Bennett who half the time sounds like he is talking. Then I might actually listen to the album. Hopefully it isn't the last we hear of her in an acoustic setting.

I had to mute it - not because of Miss Germanotta (I've known for a while she's more talented than many of her critics claim, and I don't have time for the "She ripped off everyone under the sun" crowd because Lady Gaga's never denied the debt she owes to her predecessors, which is a lot more than I can say for Madonna) but because I loathe The Sound Of Music. Never cared for it, from boyhood to today.

Also a very professional jazz pianist in her own right.

The thing here is 'performance art', that's her context.

It was also a pleasant surprise to see Julie Andrews arrive on stage. She looked great.

I guess we here are all of a certain age and can enjoy a good voice with no need for gimmicks. How sure are you that the younger crowd could appreciate Miss Germanotta's musicality if she was stripped (no pun intended! cool ) of all the outrageous costumes and the silly attitude that make headlines and "break the internet"?

I got the same "chills" watching this performance, that I got when Dame Shirley Bassey sang "Goldfinger" at the same event a couple of years ago.

I wept. It was wonderful. And she seemed SO excited to be there performing it. Let alone when she introduced Andrews. Wow.

She is the real deal. Don't let that weird persona she created for mass consumption fool anyone.

But you need to remember that she's first and foremost a 'performance artist'. It's not correct to assume that she's first and foremost a singer or a pianist, these are just two aspects of what she does. To call her a musician is closer to the mark, but there's THEATRE in there too.

People focus on the Vaudeville/Bette Midler/Madonna elements, but Salvador Dali is as much an influence. Many of those bizarre dresses and outfits are trying to say something on an intellectual level.

Plus, a performer of this kind is also a chameleon. She'll always thwart your expectations, that's part of the therapy she performs. It's a mistake to judge her as just a singer. Artist is the word. By mixing genres, she reinvents but also crosses boundaries like a diplomat. Singers are two a penny, even good ones, artists are not.

JohnnyG --

Who said I was sure? I said, "Here's hoping," because I'm aware of the contemporary mass market syndrome you point out. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed...

Sinusjr --

Tony Bennett may not have the pipes he had when he was Gaga's age and just starting out -- few could, even back in that day -- but he's still one of the last surviving master interpreters of the Great American Songbook, and even in his twilight years he brings a lot to the party. Just saying.

I thought that Lady Gaga's "The Sound Of Music" medley blew the Best Song performances away (including that Godawful song from "Selma"), though I liked the song from the Glen Campbell documentary.
