About a month ago, I saw the recent release of THE GAMBLER, starring Mark Wahlberg, which is a remake of the 1974 James Caan film of the same name. This new film nominally has music by Jon Brion and Theo Green. But the soundtrack is dominated by pop songs, and that's all that appears on the 15-track digital album being offered on Amazon. I honestly don't recall any of the score.

One Huffington Post blogger wrote: "Jon Brion supposedly co-composed the music, but there is no evidence of this at all. The soundtrack sounds like a parody of a 90's movie soundtrack with it's overabundant alt rock covers (in one scene in particular, the music is distractingly similar to the first SOCIAL NETWORK trailer)."

The Hollywood Reporter felt that "the music and songs interspersed between scenes feel too lightweight and ephemeral in light of the matter at hand."

But this was contradicted by a Galveston, Texas reviewer who felt that "the music by Jon Brion and Theo Green, exquisitely devised to enhance the mood, provides some levity from the tension."

And another reviewer writes: "The score is similarly better than average, with everybody's favourite commercial composer Jon Brion providing an ominous and effective soundtrack."

The score was noticeable to me in the opening scenes where Wahlberg walks into an upscale illegal den and wins and loses several rounds, also when he goes into the depths of the den to play his final round of roulette at the end of the film. Also in the scenes with John Goodman/ some clips of which were 'official clips' released online. But the very diverse song selections were the most noticeable part of the overall music. The score was quite interesting subtle electronic stuff, not really what Jon Brion is known for... so it could be possible he was largely replaced.

The clip you posted above isn't from the film score or the film at all though... I think its one of those things where people post their own music on youtube and pretend its from a film!

It didn't sound like it really fit in with the tone of the film, so I'm removing it from my initial post
