Intense action score by Leonard Rosenman for demon auto thriller gets first-ever release on CD! Existential horror tale directed by Elliot Silverstein, with James Brolin, Ronny Cox, offers frightening attacks by automobile run amok in small town. Where did it come from? Why is it here? Little time for questions as sheriff and deputy struggle to protect citizens. Rosenman anchors with powerhouse statements of medieval "Dies Irae" melody, for tuba, trombone. Low brass play major role in score throughout with virtuoso trumpets getting the spotlight in tour de force chase sequences. Woodwinds have their say as well. Action remains keynote, so rhythmic vitality stays front and center. Interestingly, Rosenman offers trademark atonal material to suggest arid desert landscape but imbues action cues with strong tonal flavor, often with major triads in trumpets leading the way. Striking approach! Intrada CD presents entire score from original 35mm three-channel stereo scoring session elements transferred to 1/2" tape by Universal and vaulted in pristine condition. Extras include three unused versions of climactic "Apparition" cue plus Universal promo spots. CD also offers composer's intense attack overlay cue for school band parade sequence both with, without interrupted Sousa march. Trivia for film music buffs: Young hitchhiker in film, seen playing "William Tell" on French horn while thumbing rides, is composer John Rubinstein (Robert Redford's Jeremiah Johnson, Redford's The Candidate). His brief horn "performance" is also included as an extra on CD. Liner notes by Jeff Bond plus dramatic design by Joe Sikoryak completes dramatic package. Leonard Rosenman conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

Where did it come from? Why is it here?

Why was the film made?

P.S. It's "The car... it's in here," not "The car is in the garage!"

Heh heh.

This will be one of the only times I ever say such: I must get this Rosenman score.

not having seen the movie, I was hoping for a more meditative horror score like his Twilight Zone or COMBAT work. Even if it's familiar Rosenman territory, impossible not to order along with DUEL.

Yeah, I actually like the action/suspense music in ST4 and this sounds like a lot more of that.

Actually I really like the actiony stuff. But what's with all that stuff as the extras?

Lordy lordy! This is great. Do I really need it? No. Would I really love to have it (and listen to it - not just put it on a shelf)? Yes. Will I get murdered for it? I think so!

Thanks again - and damn you!

P.S. - I've just done the math(s) and notice that the score is surprisingly short. I always had the feeling that the movie was quite heavily scored. I wonder if that's just because in the major set-pieces the music was so up-front... or my mind playing tricks on me?

We had another thread recently about music that takes you back to being a kid. Hearing the samples of this unknown-to-me Rosenman score, I did have that feeling.

One, because I got to know his music so well as a kid, from Fantastic Voyage to Marcus Welby. Rosenman's was one of the primary soundtrack soundworlds that appealed to me as a kid.

And two, because of how I played and played his LOTR two-lp set back in the day. (The only extended soundtrack I had besides Williams before the CD expanded album years.)

Like Rozsa and Barry, Rosenman's sound is always clear and distinctive, and I love hearing more variations of his style. Even if I couldn't care less about the movie (and I just couldn't).

A great week for those of us who came of age in the wild and crazy 70's.

I've spent my life hoping for countless soundtracks to be released. And over the decades so many of them have come to light. Of particular note were Herrmann's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH and the music from STAR TREK: TOS. They were personal Holy Grails.

Among the remaining are what I've come to consider as Leonard Rosenman's '70s "Horror Trinity"...PROPHECY, THE CAR and RACE WITH THE DEVIL.

Two down...one to go.

A sincere thank you to Doug Fake and all the Intrada staff.
