THURSDAY, MARCH 5

ALIEN---Sigourney Weaver's reply to if she's returning as Ellen Ripley in Neill Blomkamp's sequel, "There are two factors [Blomkamp] needs: Ripley and the Aliens." Blomkamp commented, "She'll be in the cast. She is the Alien franchise, to me, so yeah."
Weaver said about the Blomkamp sequel, “He’s a real fan. I think he’ll be true to the world and take it in unexpected directions. It’s got a lot of sinew in it. It will certainly stand up to the others and probably break a lot of new ground as well.”

IT---Cary Fukunaga (TRUE DETECTIVE) commented on his movie based on the Stephen King novel, "It's really good to know Stephen likes what we did. I've been on this project for about five years. I had already read versions of the script but nothing felt right. Everybody tried to put too much into it, telling it from the perspective of the adult and the child in a two hour movie. It didn't fit. So I decided to throw it all away and start from scratch. [Fukunaga and writers David Kajganich and Chase Palmer] changed names, dates, dynamics, but the spirit is similar to what he'd like to see in cinemas, I think." Fukunaga said the biggest challenge is finding the actor to play Pennywise the Clown who was played by Tim Curry in the tv miniseries. The movie is set during the 1980s to the present.

THE NIGHT MANAGER---three cast additions were announced for the BBC One/AMC miniseries based on the John le Carre novel. Joining stars Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston are: Olivia Colman (BROADCHURCH), Tom Hollander (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST) and Elizabeth Debicki (THE GREAT GATSBY).

FLASHMAN---20th Century Fox movie underway based on the novels by George McDonald Fraser (OCTOPUSSY, THE THREE MUSKETEERS). Ridley Scott is a co-producer. The novels inspired the 1975 movie ROYAL FLASH starring Malcolm McDowell.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST---Dan Stevens (DOWNTON ABBEY) is in talks to play the Beast, and Luke Evans (THE HOBBIT) is in talks to play Gaston. Emma Watson will play Beauty in the live-action remake movie.

DUST---Lionsgate movie underway based on the video game in which World War II never ended which led to a continuing war between the Allies (US, UK, France), the Axis (Germany, Japan and Italy) and the SSU (USSR, China) involving giant combat robots. Rawson Thurber Marshall (WE'RE THE MILLERS) is the director.

MRS. FRISBY AND THE RATS OF NIMH---MGM live-action/CGI movie underway based on the children's book. The book inspired the 1982 animated movie THE SECRET OF NIMH.

BARBIE---Diablo Cody (JUNO) will rewrite the script for the live-action Sony Pictures movie based on the Mattel doll.

49TH KEY---John Barrowman (TORCHWOOD) is the star/producer of this miniseries based on a HEAVY METAL story set in the 16th century where an archaeologist and an autistic boy journey across England in search of a magic world below the Earth's surface.

DUST - Could be fun. Much opportunity for artistic spectacle here.

MRS. EASY AND THE RATS OF NIMH---MGM live-action/CGI movie underway based on the children's book. The book inspired the 1982 animated movie THE SECRET OF NIMH.

Please tell me "Mrs. Easy" is a typo! The title of the book is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Now Don Bluth had to change Frisby to Brisby for his movie "The Secret of NIMH", because Hasbro who owns the spinning disc toy Frisbee threatened to sue over the name. (The name was changed in post production before digital editing tools existed I might add!)

The other funny thing is a new movie based off of the novel was announced something like ten years ago and we never heard another thing from that. So I wouldn't hold my breath. The animated movie by Don Bluth was nothing like the book. Bluth took the novel and gave it a "Wizard of Oz" make over. It's not a very interesting or imaginative novel really. There's no way to top Bluth's efforts much less match it.

No problem! Thanks for continuing these updates, especially with all the Firefox problems you are sadly having.

Or it will end up looking like District 9 like all of his other movies so far. I'd still be curious to see that mix.

I read someone suggesting Paul Giamatti and like that idea.

Yeah I only saw 20 minutes of District 9 (didn't like it) and I've seen previews for his other films, and I can't tell one from the other.

District 9 was extremely funny and the prawns a superb creation. Technically superior for sure, but, I do know people who couldn't watch it - if only they'd given it a chance. I thought it had amusements galore and after a brief initial head scratch brought on by seeing something completely new, bought it, settling down to take it all in. The father prawn and youngster prawn combo was just great. The flawlessness of the live action mixed with vfx seemed to have moved the benchmark up noticeably so that it enhanced the story seamlessly - that's how I felt about it at the time.

Much, therefore, was expected of Elysium. Somehow, it didn't deliver. I believe it was partly inattention on the part of the actors. Jodie Foster must have been owing a favor and Sharlto Coply couldn't keep his mouth shut. The whole movie lurched awkwardly in spite of having been shown in story/scene order. It is difficult to pinpoint the fatal flaw - it just didn't have smoothness; like swallowing something indigestible. The visuals were great but I just didn't dig the whole scenario. A rare misfire for Matt Damon, too.

The characters in D9 made the grade but those in Elysium, very surprisingly, didn't.

Agreed 100%.....looking forward to seeing what he's come up with for "Chappie", but ultimately I'm pleased to see his name attached to Alien 5/Alien 2.5

How in the WORLD do you find another actor to play Pennywise. Tim Curry was absolutely brilliant if you ask me. The IT score by Richard Bellis is one of my all time favorites. Gonna have to put this on right now.

There doesn't seem to be a difference. Sadface.

Blomkamp`s first effort seems to be to establish a reality for his science fiction. Once that is done, things pick up. District 9 gets better once things begin to happen. I loved it; Elysium, less so, but it was still enjoyable.

If anybody is going to tell another ALIEN tale, I certainly vote for/support Blomkamp. Ignoring #3 and #4 is fine by me as well. I happen to think it was a mistake to abandon the tremendously rich universe (in the case of 4) set forth by 1 and 2.
