Well, my John Scott winning streak couldn't last forever and sadly, try as I might, I just can't find any love for this score.
There's nowt wrong with it per se. I can hear that he's riffing on a lot of the devilish music he's absorbed during his upbringing (he alludes to this in his notes) but after 3 complete listens, the whole thing just leaves me cold.
It doesn't help that the recording sounds distant/faraway and the orchestra lacks power and punch to my ears.
I know there is a lot of love for this CD around here (I've read many comments on other Scott threads bigging it up) but this is the first CD by him that won't be dragging any tracks over to my mp3 player.
More alarmingly, I moved onto The Lucona Affair after this and my first impressions of that score are underwhelming too! (I will defer opinion on that one until some more plays though, cos I didn't like Becoming Colette straight off, but love it now).
Still, share your love. I enjoy reading others' comments. smile

While I agree it's not his *best* score, it's a fascinating one that I find highly enjoyable - Lots of great rhythm setters and, as always with Scott, superb orchestrations. It indeed does not have as rich a heart or spirit as some of his best efforts, but that's probably more a reflection of what the material called for than anything.

I also don't really care for THE LUCONA AFFAIR; In fact that's the Scott score I've visited the least. The film's subject matter sounds terribly boring. Along with THE JUNGLE BOOK 2 and SCARLET TUNIC (speaking of boring plot lines...), it just kinda bores me - There's maybe ten mins of highlights and a lot of source-like cues as I recall.

As far as his 90's output goes - WALKING THUNDER, SHERGAR, THE NORTH STAR, FAR FROM HOME, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, LIONHEART and, as you mentioned, BECOMING COLETTE - Now THERE are some amazing scores!

This man's brilliance never fails to boggle my mind. I truly think he surpasses everyone - I do mean everyone - Of a greater namesake when it comes to mastery of the orchestra!

Kevin, do the liners say what orchestra (or location) the score was recorded? Sorry, I don't have my CD at hand.

Thank You,
Jay

Interesting... this is one of my two or three favorites out of the John Scott scores I've heard! I was in raptures listening to it. Will revisit.

Thank you guys...I thought this was a UK scored film. A lot of Scott's later film's were recorded on the Continent. I do like Witchcraft. I don't think the performance is not up to par. Kevin, give it a go sometime in the future, you may change your opinion.
