SPINDLE OR MUTILATE (1971) TV-Movie Score.

Here's his Main Title played while we see a 70's Punch card computer.

Anyone like this whacky score? I believe it's quite short, perhaps not more than 15 - 20 minutes in the movie and maybe shorter.

What do you think Goldsmith is trying to tell us with the music?

Interesting that this movie was directed by Ted Post, who the year before directed BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES for the Big Screen and who Jerry would have worked with on that film, if he wasn't reassigned to PATTON, also produced at Fox and directed by Franklin Schaffner. Wonder if Ted asked for Jerry, wanting to work with him, but losing him on the APES sequel?

Cool to think if Jerry might have come up with some interesting Choral music for the Radiation Scarred Mutants in BENEATH. Maybe a tad of AVE ALPHA OMEGA?

Ha ha, I only clicked on the Youtube link after I'd read this comment, and can completely see what you mean.

My head was suddenly filled with images of several British sitcoms from the 70s.... something with Sid James or Robin Askwith.

What was Jerry trying to tell us? "I'm free!" by the sound of it (that one's for UK viewers, I think wink)

Errm... well the main title is goofy trash... and it's meant to be. Nuff said. However, the rest of the score is really quite interesting in places. Still a bit goofy, but nicely weird too. I wonder if Jerry had discovered some magic parsley and ziz zag papers that weekend. wink

It's a tremendous little score... wacky and original. In keeping with the slightly surreal tone of the TV movie. I still have the movie off of a rare TV broadcast back in the day. Copied to DVD for posterity.

It was about 25 minutes. I think the main theme was trying to create a contrast with the idea of a bunch of sweet old ladies having an adventure with the perils of modern 1970's technology, and how out of their depth they were. With the accent on the comedy of it, even the though the peril in question was a killer. The majority of the music concerned the killer, who was scored with Goldsmith's unique take on abstract jazz, in the same vein as A Step Out of Line, Pursuit, and parts of The Detective. The wacky old lady stuff I think is maybe a bit dated, if definitely uniquely Goldsmith, but his jazz ideas are really interesting. Are the tapes considered MIA?
