Found it on Spotify. The animated score is a masterpiece. Here Menken delivers a watered down reboot. Just another typical modern day score, lacking memorable themes , thematic drive, or fluid coherency. The classic themes are poorly presented. And there's zero new themes I can think of that caught my attention. Very lackluster.

There's parts of the score I really like and I still think Menken should get more scoring gigs, but overall, this is disappointing. I can't stand Emma Watson and Emma Thompson's vocals on this. The auto tune is so heavy and it feels like everybody is trying to play catch up with the music. If Disney is going to do more of these reboots, please start either hiring actors who can really sing or use professional singers for the vocal parts. This could have been great, but overall, the original is soooo much better. Really makes me wish for the legacy collection treatment on the original, but probably won't ever happen...

The songs are poorly sung. All the "high notes" from Belle are missing from the live action version. Emma Thompson didn't even attempt them. Probably a good thing, but it completely lacks dynamic range.

Yup agreed. Same reaction I had.

some parts of the score are fine, but not to justify to buy the album

one not to the songs:
the finale is really bad, when Audra McD tries to batlle agains the full orchestra sining "Beauty and the Beast" - the fight of the year
more does not automatically means better frown

same for the Emma Thompson version, nothing like the more intimate original

Couldn't agree more. The finale is horrible Audra McD is completely out of place as a vocalist in this. She can sing, but the operatic vocals do not fit in this type of movie.

Just saw the movie tonight and according to what I heard and the score, this is the chronological order:

2. Aria
3. Main Title: Prologue, Pt 2
4. Belle
5. Belle meets Gaston (Score)
6. How Does a Moment Last Forever (Music Box)
7. Your Mother (Score)
8. The Laverie (Score)
9. Belle (Reprise)
10. Wolf Chase (Score)
11. Entering the Castle (Score)
12. A White Rose (Score)
13. The Beast (Score)
14. Meet The Staff (Score)
15. Home (Extended Remix) (Score)
16. Madame de Garderobe (Score)
17. Gaston
18. There's a Beast (Score)
19. A Petal Drops (Score)
20. A Bracing Cup of Tea (Score)
21. Be Our Guest
22. The West Wing (Score)
23. Wolves Attack Belle (Score)
24. Days in the Sun
25. The Library (Score)

36. Belle Stops the Wagon (Score)
37. The Mob Song
38. Castle Under Attack (Score)
39. Turret Pursuit (Score)
40. You Came Back (Score)
41. Transformations (Score)
42. Beauty and the Beast (Finale)
---End of movie---

---Credits---
43. How does a Moment Last Forever (CĂ©line Dion)
44. Beauty and the Beast (Ariana Grande & John Legend)
45. Evermore (Josh Groban)
---End of credits---

The following songs are not used in the movie itself, except song 47.
46. Overture (Score)
47. Main Title: Prologue (Score) (Instrumental and combined version of Main Title: Prologue, Pt 1 and Main Title: Prologue, Pt 2)
48. Aria (Demo)
49. How Does a Moment Last Forever (Music Box) (Demo)
50. Days in the Sun (Demo)
51. How Does a Moment Last Forever (Montmartre) (Demo)
52. Evermore (Demo)

Hearing the score combined with the movie, it does add up in my opinion. Especially Dan Stevens' "Evermore" is beautiful to watch. If you're going to see the movie, try and see it in IMAX 3D, it really emerges you into what's happening.

Thanks for putting the album in order, I agree it sounds much better with the songs and score intact.

With this I decided to listen to the music before watching the film. Considering my great appreciation for the original film and it's music, I knew I would have a hard time swallowing this one. At least by listening to the complete soundtrack beforehand, I would be less surprised by changes to the music I am so familiar with.

Personally, I believe this helped me appreciate the film that much more. I wasn't spending much of my time cringing or thinking in my head of the many things they changed. Nonetheless I do lament my favorite piece of the score now missing, the reveal of the castle library, as it was reinterpreted.

Prior to seeing the film my first thought about the soundtrack was, "This sounds more like a Broadway musical than a movie soundtrack." Now after seeing the film, I appreciate the music more because I'm more familiar with the melodies from the new songs that are now sprinkled throughout the score.

My only gripe is Emma Watson's voice. Her voice is not bad by any means, but compared to every other person singing, her voice pales in comparison. I do wish she sang more than spoke the songs, but other than that it was very enjoyable.

So is this soundtrack better than the original? No. But it is hard to compare a classic with a new interpretation. So then, is this soundtrack good on its own? Most definitely.

I find the new score incredibly boring. Menken decided to go full Tyler, a bit of Powell, in there with a massive orchestra, but all the new action music sounds incredibly lame and, well, ordinary, and so obvious. This is not good for a film musical with a reputation for changing the paradigm. But most of the new action stuff is like any David Newman or Lorne Balfe 'creations' for any straight to streaming sequel to a Disney princess film.

I would bet that Menken had a different idea of how the score should be, but as much as he's a powerhouse Disney composer, he hasn't really done anything with them since Tangled in 2010, which was no Aladdin. The powers/producers of Disney conglomerate surely had full control on how this score should sound.

Probably a lot of truth in this. Disney had a really good track record with animated scores. But now they've gone in RC direction. I really find Tangled, Big Hero 6, Moana, and now B&TB extremely dull if not a distraction. Not to mention the whole MCU.

So, David Newman is no good, in your book?

It's like you said, it's not better than the original, but it's a good soundtrack on its own.
Personally, I prefer Emma Watson 'speaking' the songs, as it sounds good, rather than have singing them and have it sound like shit.
I see this soundtrack and the original as 2 different soundtracks, although there are similarities, they are two complete different soundtracks. A remake of a movie (and its soundtrack) does not mean that everything has to be remade in exactly the same way. I see this movie and its score as a different take on the original, seen from another angle. I personally regret the missing of the original "West Wing" score on this soundtrack, but as Belle didn't storm out in this movie as she did on the original (She does storm out but in a more reserved way), it makes sense that the original, more dramatic piece is missing from this score; as this score represent this movie, not the original. Remakes are not representations, and that's a good thing in both music and visuals. Some things are the same but it is not a blind representation of the original.

My problem also is that the more interesting themes are mostly presented in songs and not as prominent in the score. I don't generally like listening to songs separate from the movie and that is especially the case here with the terrible auto-tune. The auto-tune was very distracting for me during the film itself. I'm also surprised they didn't provide any instrumental versions of song tracks with vocals removed since that is where most of the interesting themes are.

My review of the score for new live-action remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, for anyone who's interested. Warning: this one is pretty in-depth!
