Reportedly, the release was pulled by Bear Family Records, due to legal reasons. I was very fortunate to score a copy despite the decision to halt the release. The CD has archival sound, but is thrilling to listen to. There's some wild chase music that I can only describe as "orchestral rockabilly," and some really hard-driving guitar picking. This is a soundtrack that I've loved since the early 1960's, and it's phenomenal to have it on CD. I hope that Bear Family can resolve whatever the issues are and "reissue" this one-of-a-kind score in the near future.

There was a listing for a soundtrack LP (United Artists, I think) in the PhonoLog catalogs circa 1970 or so, but I don't think that the LP was ever released. The catalogs also listed an album for another United Artists release, BEACH RED, but I don't think that one was pressed, either.

This continues to be listed within their website:

http://www.bear-family.de/blog/blog/2014/12/24/video-thunder-road-original-soundtrack/

Jack Marshall's name wasn't mentioned in the original post, so fans of THE MUNSTERS might be also be interested in this title.

[I at first confused THUNDER ROAD with Hubert Cornfield's PLUNDER ROAD (which has a score by Irving Gertz)]

I received a one-line email from Bear Family, claiming that "serious" legal issues had halted the release.

It seems strange to me, since I don't believe them to be a bootleg operation. They normally license everything carefully.

The CD also has a bunch of vocal and instrumental performances of the film's songs, so I wonder if one of those artists wasn't properly cleared? The strangest cover of the "Ballad of Thunder Road" song is by the Super Stocks, who perform the song as a surf tune!

I hope that after all the money Bear Family put into this project (Jeez... a 108-page booklet?), they will be able to solve whatever legal issues that came up, and get this CD out there. I can't even imagine the legal issues with a release such as this... the estates of Jack Marshall, Robert Mitchum and Keely Smith, Capitol Records, plus all the rights for the cover versions of the song. That must have been a nightmare! And still, something slipped under the radar.

I still hold out hopes that this quirky and cool score will see the light of day, as I also hope Jack Marshall's equally quirky and cool score for THE GIANT GILA MONSTER will surface one day.

I wish I could say that I remember Marshall's score for THE GIANT GILA MONSTER, but I never took notice of it. I love the THUNDER ROAD score, so I should give GILA another spin, if only for that reason.

I recall attending a triple bill of THE GIANT GILA MONSTER, THE KILLER SHREWS, and DRAGSTRIP RIOT circa 1962.

I and two other people I know recently (late April) ordered this CD from a third-party seller on Amazon. This was after Bear Family pulled the release. The cost was under $11.00. It was from a dealer in England whose name I won't mention, although the first letter of the name was "r." All three had of us had to complain after the delivery date of June 4th came and went. All three of us were told that it must have gotten lost in the mail, and were all given refunds.

However, it's seems a bit fishy to me that all three of our packages were "lost in the mail."

I'd like to know if anyone else on the boards might have also ordered one from "r__________-imports" and didn't receive it. Seems like some kind of scam.

If anybody DID get a copy from them or ANYWHERE and wants to get rid of it, let me know. My email address is in my profile.

Holy Jeez! $362.00? Man, I really hope Bear family can resolve whatever legal issue they had that prevented this release, even if they have to leave off a few tracks (as long as it's not the score tracks).

And, where did they get the score tracks? If it was from the Jack Marshall family or estate, do the tracks for THE GIANT GILA MONSTER also reside there? That score (and film) is one of my guilty pleasures.

I e-mailed them to ask if it was likely to be released at some point.
Answer from them this morning was "We don't have any news about it yet. Sorry!"

"Marking pen line through bar code" appears in that eBay listing. That sounds very scary, as if the item is already considered a cut-out.

Promotional (advance) copies are also often marked with a barcode slash, hole punch, etc. If yours isn't marked in such a way, you could probably fetch at least a cool g for it. wink

My copy isn't for sale at any price, but thanks for the sentiment. THUNDER ROAD was one of several scores that I haunted record stores for, during the 1960's. Other scores I hoped to find included RAMPAGE, THE GIANT OF MARATHON, and THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE. Fortunately for me, all of those scores eventually came out on CD, however briefly some of them were on the market.

I was exaggerating of course, but that ebay auction is further evidence as to what lengths (or depths, when speaking of pockets) fans and/or collectors will sometimes go to obtain an item of rarity. So cool that you were able to get ahold of a copy after pining so long for a release. If they manage to work out the legal kinks, I'll definitely snag one.

I do have a lengthy history with THUNDER ROAD. I mentioned that I saw a listing of a soundtrack LP for it in the record store's PhonoLog (or whatever that huge catalog was called), circa 1970. So, I placed an order for it then, but was pretty sure the order would never be filled. It wasn't.

The PhonoLog also listed another UA soundtrack LP, for BEACH RED, but I don't think that one was ever released, either.

Exactly. Who could possibly enjoy listening to a CD when a sharpie line disrupts the aesthetic elegance of the barcode?

Fortunately, my copy doesn't have the marking pen line through the bar code.

I had a second copy that I was going to put on eBay, but when I saw the line through the barcode, I realized that no listener would want this, so it went to Goodwill.
