After nearly four decades, powerhouse Laurence Rosenthal soundtrack for riveting sequel to A Man Called Horse finally gets fully restored 2-CD release! Irvin Kershner directs, Richard Harris reprises role of English aristocrat John Morgan, once enslaved by Sioux, now aiding them in war with white trappers. Initially available on United Artists label LP at time of film's release, then slightly expanded on CD many years later, current Intrada release offers entire massive score with treasure trove of previously unreleased music! Generous array of additional cues bring presentation to 102 minutes of exciting, colorful western scoring! Brand new digital mixes created from 2" 24-track session masters recorded in London allow vibrant clarity and sonic detail like never before. If that were not enough, CD 2 also has moving, elegiac Americana score by Rosenthal for 1999 TV movie Inherit The Wind starring Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott as Henry Drummond and Matthew Brady, two opposing attorneys arguing Scopes 'Monkey' Trial of 1925, directed by Daniel Petrie Sr., from famous play by Jerome Lawrence & Robert Edwin Lee. Here the composer scores inherent drama with quiet understatement, building to moving finale featuring long, expressive solo trumpet over strings, horns. Absolutely beautiful writing! Complete 29-minute score presented in stereo from original two-track digital session mixes. Package design by Joe Sikoryak includes full cue assembly details for both scores plus informative notes by John Takis. Laurence Rosenthal conducts. Intrada Special Collection 2-CD set available while quantities and interest remain!

OMG In my excitement about John Barry's The Dove I nearly missed this one. I'm a huge fan of this score and movie. Saw it at the Odeon Leicester Square in December 1976. Also a fan of a Man Called Horse from 1970.

Fantastic release Intrada, many thanks. Ordered smile

Damn you, Intrada! As much as I love "Return of a Man Called Horse" (and I do), the Varèse satisfies me. And then you had to throw in "Inherit the Wind"!

Okay, fine, I'm in.

"Return of a Man Called Horse" is my favorite Rosenthal score, and this one is complete so O.

I'm confused by the description. It says:
Here the composer scores inherent drama with quiet understatement, building to moving finale featuring long, expressive solo trumpet over strings, horns. Absolutely beautiful writing! Complete 29-minute score presented in stereo from original two-track digital session mixes.

But the very first track on ItW is listed as an alternate and the original version is not included. How can it be then the "complete" score. Since we live in a world where everybody has to be apparently lead by the nose and the obvious stated: this is not about "missing seconds" or "missing minutes" or "pointless complaining" or anything else you got. The score is obviously not complete by the tracklisting unless a mistake was made and it is included.

I *think* this is just a case of following the original paperwork, as I'm pretty sure the take slated as "alternate" is the one that ultimately got used in the film.

I don't know any specifics here. But we've come to accept "alternate" in this context to mean "I recorded one version, here's another." But it doesn't always mean that. Rosenthal could have written an alternate to a source piece he didn't compose. Or possibly, it's for an alternate version of the prologue. Maybe he'd written one piece, then wrote the alternate (so marked in the cue sheets), but never recorded the first version.

I have no idea. But I don't think the score is "obviously" missing anything. If they say it's complete, I believe them. This is too easy a "gotcha" to be what it seems, I'm guessing.

No love for this magnificent score? I hope the new remaster from Intrada is an improvement over the Varese release. The Varese is way to loud. I have to turn the volume knob way down for normal listening, turning the volume up produces a harsh very loud almost distorted sound.

What a superb effort from Rosenthal, one of all time favorites!

I've been listening to this set and it's outstanding.
Return of a Man Called Horse is a vast improvement on the Varese, not only for sound, but for its fine extra content.
Inherit the Wind is wonderful too.

Hear, hear. I haven't listened to Inherit the Wind yet, but even without that very nice bonus it would still be worth the upgrade for the reasons you mentioned. I even A/B'd a few tracks from each release and the individual instruments are more clearly separated in the Intrada and the sound field crisper and more alive and present. That's my layman's description, anyway. I'm sure someone else could explain the differences more eloquently and specifically.

Cracked open my copy for Christmas. What a beauty! I haven't upgraded since I got the LP used in the 80's, so I'm super-happy!
