In collaboration with Hamburger Records and La Petite Reine, Music Box Records presents the premiere CD release of the score for Maniac, the 2012 remake of the classic 1980 slasher film. With Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood in the title role, this new Maniac retains the original’s horrific poetry as a penetrating, no-holds-barred delineation of the psychological intricacies of compulsive killer of women, conveyed in the first person.

The film’s musical score is composed by Robin Coudert, a French electropop and rock instrumentalist who has gone by the professional name of Rob since his debut in 1998. Rob, who has been scoring films since 2005, conveys the nightmarish soul of the maniac, Frank Zito. The music, like the film, doesn’t excuse Frank’s raging violence, but Rob musically the tortured soul the lurks behind the killer’s haunted eyes. Rob reflects the flavor of Maniac’s 1980’s antecedent by creating a keyboard-based score built of rhythmic melodies and riffs created by 1980s era synthesizers.

For this premiere release of Rob’s Maniac score on compact disc, Music Box Records has added five bonus tracks which did not appear on previous vinyl or digital releases. Some of them are early versions of the score’s primary motifs which afford a glimpse into Rob’s working process as he developed and finalized the Maniac score. The CD comes with an 8-page booklet featuring liner notes by Randall D. Larson who discusses the film’s conceptualizations and how Rob’s score helped create a thorough musical portrait of a disturbed, and very dangerous, psychotic maniac. The release is limited to 500 units.

This is an absolutely fantastic score, and one of my favourites from 2012. While I am not a fan of expanded releases, I love the music so much that I am, at the very least, curious about the bonus tracks. I hope they are somehow made available separately, so I don't have to double dip.

I jumped on this too since I liked the film well enough, it's a good innovation on a tired
theme - and I remember liking the score a lot, then being sad it wasn't on cd, download only.

So, good show MBR, you got my $!
Nice surprise on a Friday, and I'm digging this resurgence of 80's analog synth scoring in
indie & horror films, I'm sure more than a few of my brothers here agree, yes?

This popped through the letterbox this morning (along with Howard Shore's She-Devil). Loving what I'm hearing so far.

Oh man, finally got this in & I am in analog synth heaven - you 80s electronic, sequence loving, John Carpenter, TD dudes, you know who you are, better get on this! Bloody fantastic, sad there's only 500 copies....it's really got the vibe of Chattaway's original score, updated with modern ideas, yet performed on great early synthesizers- follow me?
Nice essay too, Randall, as always smile

Cool. Thanks for the report, Sean. Chattaway's score is a personal fave and I'll be picking this up soon. Looking forward to it.

Speaking of the Chattaway score, does anyone else have the jewel case version of the SouthEast Records CD release that is sans booklet with the disc cut into the shape of Joe Spinelli's creepy, sweaty face? (the standard release was a digipak with a booklet insert). I got it on ebay a baker's dozen years ago but haven't seen many around.

Your one of those aforementioned dudes, dude wink

I swear Rob almost quotes Chattaway's childlike theme from 1980 - or I was having my own Frank Zito moment....then there is this electropop song that put me over the edge (meaning, I dig it, my sort of thing).
I remember that Spinelli edition when it came out & said, hell no, can't have that in the collection! I believe it is rather rare though, 250 or 500 copies - guess that's the magic Maniac edition number.

I'm not a big fan 80's horror remakes (haven't even seen this one) so not sure why I opened this thread....but I'm sure glad I did! Those samples were fantastic! Definitely a must for fans of 80's synth scores or synth/electronic scores in general

I'm telling ya!! I'm the world's biggest hater on remakes, but this one wasn't half bad, it was unique, crazy Frodo is always good & it was a rare case where I wanted the score, Stat, after seeing the film. Like my fave 80s scores/albums, this cd also does not wear out its welcome. Meaning how album production/sequencing/length was back then.

One of the very few in the last...two?...decades I grabbed immediately after seeing the film. Really lived up to the recently-overdone 'synth hype', labels are using, which doesn't always pan out. Too bad it was so limited....

You're all so late to the party! I raved about this 6 years ago!

But glad to see it sell out. I want more Rob like this and MADE IN FRANCE. REVENGE this year was good too, although far more gritty at times. Doesn't hold up as good on album as MANIAC (but MAN, what a film!).
