Like many on this board I've not really come around to Lorne Balfe's music yet, and wasn't too excited to hear that he's taking over scoring duties on the next Terminator. However, one of his scores I have quite liked is Penguins of Madagascar (though even that is overly repetitive and has just a few good tracks), and with that in mind I thought I'd listen to samples of his new DreamWorks Animation score Home.

Judging only from the samples this a pleasant surprise! Sounds like they might have temped this one with a lot of John Powell, which had led to what seems to be the most palatable and fun Balfe score yet (it put me in mind of Powell and Gregson-Williams' Antz a little bit), and I look forward to listening to the complete album!

It seems this is a digital-only release, and is out now in the UK on amazon and iTunes, you can listen to samples here:

According to Film Music Reporter this will be available in the US on April 14th, and they have two full tracks to listen to:

The cover art and FMR article mention that the music is by Lorne Balfe and Stargate, but I couldn't find any info on that.

Holy Cow!! Have no idea how I missed this. What an insanely fun score. An actual, catchy theme! Fresh take on old RC ground with better orchestration, like something John Powell would have written years ago. Actual solo instruments! Give it a listen and you might be surprised =)

... Catchy themes? Solo instruments?

But... it's Balfe!

Lorne Balfe needs to study SHIT about true orchestral composition.

Otherwise, he's just another "wannabe" composer who thinks that HE can get by, on just "computers".

As far as THE FROZEN GROUND was concerned, it was just another bunch of computer crap by someone who has made his millions already.....

Haven't proven anything to me, though.......

And "Hi Ridge"-if you're reading this......

Get YOUR own kit together....FIRST!

You stupid mother f*cker!

The nicest thing about this score is that it doesn't sound like 30 other things I own.

It's fun and infectious. Nice job.

(The movie is good too.)
