I so nearly forked out a fortune to get a copy of the SETTE NOTE IN NERO score recently and really dodged a bullet as its getting a re release soon. I love this score and thought I'd ask if anyone could recommend any similar scores? I have all the Dario a Argento stuff as well as some of Fulci's stuff like the NEW YORK RIPPER. There's so many of them with alluring titles...any of you good folk care to chip in with personal favourites?

Ennio Morricone is IMO the best at doing giallo scores, his Argento scores for the animal trilogy are to me the quintessential sound I associate with giallo. If you like those, you should also enjoy his "A Lizard in a Woman's Skin" he did for Fulci and "Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura" is great as well.

Nice to hear Sette Note in Nero will be getting a re-release! Will definitely add that to the collection.

Thanks Francis....knew I could rely on you for a response on this stuff. I appreciate you chipping in. I'll definitely check out the couple you mention as I'm not familiar with them. I love the Argento 'animal' stuff although I find 'cat' a bit of a slog at times.
Once again I'm overwhelmed by the response to a thread.... A whole 'one' reply!!! I'm feeling so lucky now it might be the time to buy a lottery ticket!! ..This Board really hacks me off sometimes.

Yeah, I'm surprised not more people have chimed in as I personally would like to hear some suggestions as well... There are still some Riz Ortolani, Stelvio Cipriani and Bruno Nicolai scores in the giallo genre I need to check out, but most often samples are as hard to find as some of the movies themselves. And they aren't always home runs as some of them tend to feel as if they were written for a different genre movie but with the odd number of atonal/experimental terror cues tossed in to remind you it's a giallo. Most of them you'll find in the Beat/cinevox catalogues.

I recommend...

Perché Quelle Strane Gocce Di Sangue Sul Corpo Di Jennifer? (1972) by Bruno Nicolai

To me, one of the rare expansions that avoids the tedious repetition of minor themes that can slow the flow of the overall mood. The pace at which the tension grows is absolutely perfect as a listening experience.

The Giallo the original poster listed are from the late period (1977 and 1982), and they don't really define the sound of the Giallo series. I would recommended starting with a few ealier Giallos as suggested, and then suggest some more...

1975 Morricone MACCHIE SOLARI (AUTOPSY). Just a bit earlier than 1977.

Morricone conducted by Nicolai yielded fine results.

I've yet to hear a giallo score I didn't like. Like Francis said, the standard formula was a mixture of groovy pop-influenced music and dissonant suspense music. The ratio of grooves to experimental avant-garde stuff varies between composers and albums, and some occasionally incorporated prog-rock and disco influences as well. I like all of it, so I'm hard to disappoint when it comes to giallo scores.

That said, my favorites are the ones that seem to stand out from the pack for one reason or another, so I'll recommend a few of those here (in no particular order).

La dama rossa uccide sette volte (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times)
Bruno Nicolai
1972
Digitmovies

I corpi presentano tracce di violenza (Torso)
Guido and Maurizio De Angelis
1973
Digitmovies

Solamente nero (Bloodstained Shadow)
Stelvio Cipriani
1978
Digitmovies

Murderock - uccide a passo di danza (Murder Rock)
Keith Emerson
1984
Cinevox

L'Uomo Dagli Occhi Di Ghiaccio / Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura
Peppino De Luca and I Marc 4 / Carlo Pes
1971 / 1972
GDM

I could go on and on and on, but I'll leave you (for now) with this, which is an all-time fave and a true standout in the genre:

Il gatto dagli occhi di giada (Watch Me When I Kill)
Trans-Europa Express
1977
Digitmovies

The bad news is that most (if not all) of these CD releases are out of print, but definitely worth tracking down!

I'm not a big fan of the giallo genre (some scores are plain unlistenable on CD), but I can definitely recommend these enjoyable titles:

Ennio Morricone
Le Foto Proibite Di Una Signora Per Bene (1970)
La Tarantola Dal Ventre Nero (1971)
Chi L'Ha Vista Morire (1972)
L'Ultimo Treno Della Notte (1975) (not sure if this one really counts as 'giallo')

Bruno Nicolai
La Notte Che Evelyn Uscì Dalla Tomba (1971)
La Dama Rossa Uccide Sette Volte (1972)
Perché Quelle Strane Gocce Di Sangue Sul Corpo Di Jennifer? (1972)

Piero Umiliani
La Morte Bussa Due Volte (1969)
5 Bambole Per La Luna D'Agosto (1970)

Other titles I own that are maybe not all strictly 'giallo', but have that "feeling":

Giovanni Fusco & Gianfranco Reverberi
La Morte Non Ha Sesso (1968)

Franco Micalizzi
I Due Volti Della Paura (1972)

Nora Orlandi
Lo Strano Vizio Della Signora Wardh (1971)

Gianni Ferrio
La Morte Risale A Ieri Sera (1970)

Riz Ortolani
L'Etrusco Uccide Ancora (1972)

Luciano Michelini
Anna, Quel Particolare Piacere (1973)

Teo Usuelli
Alla Ricerca Del Piacere (1972) ('M36' is a killer track!)

I agree. The giallo period is from about 1969 through 1975.

My personal favorites are Piero Piccioni's giallo from 1971 & 1972.

Who likes the new SAVINA from Quartet, L’ASSASSINO HA RISERVATO NOVE POLTRONE?

An Agatha Christie giallo! Wicked!

Also falls within the peak period, 1974.

A great giallo score that isn't mentioned a lot is Riz Ortolanis "Non si sevizia un paperino" for one of the very best examples of the genre (directed by Fulci).

Gialli tend to use three kinds of music: lyrical melodies (often over-the-top sweet or twisted), experimental soundscapes (for the thriller stuff) and rock (sometimes other forms of popular music). These three styles were already defined in Morricones musically defining outings for Argento, namely "Bird".

Morricone continued to use a mixture of the lyrical and experimental stuff most of the time. Check out "My Dear Killer", "Who Saw Her Die", "Short Night of the Glass Dolls", "Autopsy" and "Spasmo". Actually Morricones giallo scores can be recommended wholesale (must be about 30 films).

Bruno Nicolais scores like "Red Queen" and "Jennifer" already mix in a great deal of rock elements, which becomes the prevalent style in Argentos Goblin-scored masterworks "Profondo rosso" and genre-eclipsing "Tenebre" (which still retain the experimental stuff and lyrical melodies).

Other notable composers are Stelvio Cipriani (the wonderfully sardonic "Bay of Blood" and others) and Gianni Ferrio. Nicola Piovani did the wonderful "Perfume of the Lady in Black", Ortolani the already mentioned "Duckling", Nora Orlandi the haunting "Signora Wardh", Bixio/Frizzi/Tempera "Seven notes" (quoted by Tarantino), the De Angelis "Torso". There's a lot more, but these are probably my favourites.

Well, don't forget Bruno Nicolais "Your vice is a locked room and only I have the key" and Morricones late entry "Stendhal Syndrome"! Also, honorable mention go to two Mario Bava gialli with unusual scores: Romitellis darkly romantic "Hatchet for the Honeymoon" and Umilianis swinging "Five Dolls for the August Moon".

Fantastic folks! Thanks very much...lots of great suggestions to pursue. I'm familiar with some of the Morricone mentions ( always loved the almost hypnotic quality of his Stendhal Syndrome score.....an amazing work considering it's so much built round a simple recurring theme) but not a lot of the other ones.

My favorite Bruno Nicolai giallo is Tutti I Colori Del Buio, but that Digitmovies CD sold out years ago.

Interestingly, this soundtrack has been reissued onto vinyl LP! smile
