LAKESHORE RECORDS PRESENTS
CHILD 44 - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

Featuring Original Music By Jon Ekstrand

(April 8, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA) – Lakeshore Records will release the CHILD 44 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on April 14th and on CD May 12, 2015. The album features the film’s original score by Jon Ekstrand (EASY MONEY).

“The movie takes place in the 50’s Russia and the plot is about an idealistic pro-Stalin security officer who decides to investigate a series of child murders in a country where this sort of crime doesn’t exist,” Ekstrand explained. “He gets demoted and exiled but decides, with just the help of his wife, to continue pursuing the murderer. So we decided not to go with any electronic elements and only work with acoustic instruments and sparingly with effects. We also wanted solo Viola and balalaika tremolo beds to be a part of the score so that the overarching tone would be very dark and ominous.”

Jon Ekstrand is a Swedish film composer who began his career as a sound engineer and sound designer. In 1998 Ekstrand started at the Stockholm Film School, where he met director Daniel Espinosa who he has collaborated with on several occasions. Since 2003, Ekstrand has written the music score for several films, TV series, short films and commercials, including the internationally acclaimed EASY MONEY trilogy, HAMILTON, and the Swedish TV series SEBASTIAN BERGMAN. For Espinoda, Ekstrand has worked on THE FIGHTER (2003), BABYLON DISEASE (2004), OUTSIDE LOVE (2007), and EASY MONEY (2010). Ekstrand is currently working with the 2011 Tribeca film festival-winner Lisa Aschan on her new project WHITE PEOPLE.

CHILD 44 is a politically-charged serial killer thriller set in 1953 Soviet Russia, CHILD 44 chronicles the crisis of conscience for secret police agent Leo Demidov (Tom Hardy), who loses status, power and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa (Noomi Rapace), as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov (Gary Oldman) to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys. Their quest for justice threatens a system-wide cover-up enforced by Leo’s psychopathic rival Vasili [Joel Kinnaman], who insists “There is no crime in Paradise.”

“The key scene for me was the first scene where we see the murderer on the train tracks with the boy,” said Ekstrand. “It really told me how dark we could go with the rest of the score and also because it’s a really strong scene as well as the first presentation of the motivating evil in the picture.”

Summit Entertainment presents CHILD 44 in theaters April 17, 2015. Lakeshore Records will release the CHILD 44 – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on April 14th and on CD May 12, 2015.
