Based partly on my own nostalgia, but also on the intrinsic quality of the music, I'm going to say that the "best year" for soft rock songs was 1987. Look at this list of hits:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987_in_music#Significant_songs

1988 was great, too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_in_music#Top_hits

I was living alone in my first apartment at the time, and I remember getting cable and having VH1 on every day. I loved it. The music videos were often artistic and cinematic. Remember Boz Scaggs stepping on a pocketwatch in "Heart of Mine"? At the other end of the spectrum, there was Tawny Kitaen in that Whitesnake video... also good!

Even while it was going on in '87 and '88, I knew it would be a brief golden age, and I would miss it when it ended.

Do you remember a particular year when pop music you loved just kept on coming?

All the years from 1984 to 1995 were great for pop Music, IMHO.

I suppose it depends how old you are. My pop listening is about 80% seventies, 20% sixties, & just the odd single after the eighties.

Yes, but I was really struck by the avalanche of memorable songs that came out in 1987-88. The music videos didn't hurt either, a lot of them being so well-made.

I once saw a program-length commercial for Time-Life's set of 1970s pop, and if I hadn't already owned so many of the songs, I would have ordered it for sure.
