Planned - but never released - 1979 David Shire soundtrack album from Joan Tewkesbury drama with Talia Shire finally becomes available on CD!

Planned - but never released - 1979 David Shire soundtrack album from Joan Tewkesbury drama starring Talia Shire finally becomes available on CD! Sterling cast surrounding Talia Shire includes Keith Carradine, Richard Jordan, John Houseman, John Belushi. Story of Talia Shire's dissolving marriage and her reflections on previous troubled relationships affords composer David Shire ample opportunity to write multiple themes, each with unique melodic lines, harmonic colors. Highly dramatic ideas also weave into tapestry. Shire anchors with gorgeous love theme for Dianne & Wayne, uses it as main building block but allows numerous other themes to share spotlight as well. Aggressive, charged main title launches score in propulsive mode, then individual thematic ideas emerge as score progresses. Brief but powerful! Interestingly, distributor Avco Embassy had confidence in Academy Award potential of Shire's score, engaged Columbia Records to prepare soundtrack album featuring 31 minutes of Shire's work (plus four unrelated standards sung by John Belushi), then promoted demo album for voting consideration. Commercial LP was planned but then cancelled. Actual stereo album masters remained locked in Sony vaults until now. Crisp recording by Dan Wallin brings considerable impact, detail to orchestral performance. Though score ultimately did not win recognition it deserved, composer was able to reprise main love theme many years later in his successful 2007 musical Take Flight about the history of early aviation. Now Shire fans can finally enjoy Old Boyfriends in the world premiere release of his score, presented as he originally produced and assembled it for album release back in 1979. Notes by Tim Greiving provide details about this rare score, Joe Sikoryak package design features original campaign artwork. David Shire conducts. Lots of film music connections with Miss Shire.
Daughter of Carmine Coppola.
Married to this films' composer for 10 years (indeed, I imagine their relationship was breaking down while this film was being worked upon).
I have a track from this film on his brilliant Film Music promo/compilation.
I will listen to the samples later on (at home/away from work) before deciding upon a purchase.
Still...cool release.

David Shire is one of the most talented composers working today and it's always great to see his work released. This one sounds lush and with a very distinct (i.e. wonderful) period sound. I've always wanted to see this movie as well, which as far as I know only exists as a VHS and hasn't even been released as an "archive" DVD-R yet.

Here's a case where I changed my mind. I said I wasn't going to get it. I tried to watch the full movie on youtube, but I couldn't get into it. I listened to the samples at Intrada a number of times. Well, I took a chance and ordered it . It arrived this afternoon and all I can say is it is a wonderful score rich in melody. Sorry to see this thread heading into "oblivian",so I decided to resurrect it.

I'm not familiar with the film, but the samples sound really interesting to me. I'm looking forward to it.

Another county heard from: I saw this movie while in endless repeat on cable in the 80s and all I remembered was Buck Henry's droll scene. But I have always liked David Shires' music, so was happy to pick up my copy at the office and give it a spin today.

WOW.

They do not write 'em like this anymore. Mr. Shire is near the top of his game here. Give those samples a listen, you'll be surprised that a title called "old Boyfriends" can be so dynamic as well as so lush---without ever sounding mushy.

Sending a Dear John letter to collectors on Feb.12, this is a terrific one by Shire, highly recommended. Rather varied score covers a lot of ground in its run time - one of those lean & fulfilling listens. Even opens with a semi-action cue, which I didn't see coming at all.
