Here's a short interview with James D'Arc of Brigham Young University Film Archive. Amongst other things, he gives an update on the long awaited new CD of Max Steiner's score for THE SEARCHERS.

A very interesting interview. It's encouraging to see at least two Max Steiner scores are planned for this year: The Searchers and Fighter Squadron. I hope the few cues that remain from Dive Bomber can be put on the Fighter Squadron CD as bonus tracks. And I would think The Searchers would sell very well, it's one of Max's best scores, and of course it's a classic John Wayne western that is still very popular today. More Max Steiner CDs please! smile

Yes, I remastered the sound. But the booklet is the work of the wonderful and indefatigable Jim Titus. We have been so fortunate in having super talented designers and Jim is absolutely TOPS!!

And yes, thanks Jim for getting the monkey off MY back! And for officially announcing FIGHTER SQUADRON, which I can say has AMAZING sound. It is one of Steiner's all-time great barn-burners and will be a real joy for fans of rousing action scores. Whet your appetites by checking out the film. A WWII re-working of THE DAWN PATROL with emphasis on action and comedy. Maybe no classic as a film but a heck of a lot of fun.

Until Columbia unearthed the tracks to ON THE WATERFRONT I would have said no chance of seeing THE CAINE MUTINY surface. But now - who knows?!?

Obvious, I agree with you. And I think with all of us will also be Basil, Niall from Ireland, Chris Rimmer, Ron Pulliam, Morricone and many, many others. In the first place Basil, who for years asked patiently for a new brilliant release of THE SEARCHERS!

(Ray Faiola) We're encouraged, believe me, we're encouraged!!

Ray, believe me, with D’Arc’s interview and with your words, “WE” ARE THE ENCOURAGED ONES!
We were expecting, day after day, “open-mouthed”, news on another Steiner’s release… and what a title is coming now: THE SEARCHERS!. After a long silence from BYU, we hope that this Steiner pillar score and the following FIGHTER SQUADRON will start a new wave of releases from the old materials in the vault. My hope goes also on Friedhofer and Tiomkin. I know it’s very difficult to know something definitive about VERA CRUZ, but Tiomkin’s HIS MAJESTY O’KEEFE is Warners, so I think the score can be found. Ray, can you give some in depth information?

I came into score collecting too late to catch up with THE SEARCHERS ost so I'll be getting the remastered edition.

I hope the new edition will include all the versions of the title song? The film only uses half the song, as I recall. There were two more verses.

I will purchase the CD if for no other reason than to listen to the closing scene. I lose it every time when Ethan with Debbie arrives in the foreground and Debbie's mother clutches the towel to her mouth. The chord at that precise moment is beautiful beyond description.
