I put on the DVD and can report the music sounds crisp and dynamic...and mono. Everything is in the center. Sound effects and dialog are stereo, as reported.

I should think you don't want to get sucked into this smile

Perhaps the best way to title this thread would have been: "GET OFF MY LAWN, YOU DARN MONO MONGRELS!!!!!"

I accept your comments, Mr Caporiccio. I'm going to investigate further and if I find out anything I'll report back.

To elaborate on what I have already said. I'm not disagreeing with you. I have been at a loss over the years to what the explanation is to why it sounds this way. I'm listening to the stereo track on the old pan & scan disc, and from memory it doesn't really sound any different to the discrete track used in later issues..
The stereo mix of the film, I'm pretty sure, does not exist in separate dialog, music and effects stems, so nobody can really do anything to effect a change in the mix to the extent that we are hearing.
A lot of the music from the fifties and sixties for the mono films only exist in mono form although I'm sure they were originally recorded in three-track.
In the mid-nineties, when I was working in sound transfer, they decided to do a stereo version of "Jungle Book". The multi-track masters were brought out of storage, all on 35mm 3-track mag, and I had the job of transferring onto 35mm 3-track all the circled takes. The quality of the tracks were fantastic with great separation and as a result, the music editor offered to the soundtrack division copies of the music which could be mixed to two-track for the cd as what they had was mono. Well the offer was rejected and the reason given was that they could get stereo out of what they had, which didn't make any sense to us and, surely enough, when I bought the cd it was mono.
This is an example of what is going on in the industry where the various departments, home video, soundtrack etc., have their own ways of doing things and do not work hand-in-hand with the main sound department to get the correct tracks.
In the near future I will make an effort to find out what happened although there are so many changes to where I worked I can't guarantee success.

Mr. Pickard - thanks for the try.

Also, on the 5.1 dvd, you can completely lower the center channel and all you will hear is the left right music - in stereo.

If Disney's music archive is "one of the best organized in the world," how come there were a number of cues they left off both SLEEPING BEAUTY and PINOCCHIO, and the older release of BAMBI, all cues that had been on the lp's they released years ago?

What's going on here?

After all this hoopla about how wonderful and comprehensive these releases are, then to release incomplete scores, when they have plenty of space to include the whole thing.

The latest much trumpeted release of PINOCCHIO doesn't even have most of the end sequence, starting with Gepetto's awakening on the beach, and continuing up to the Blue Fairy's final transformation. Instead, it jumps from Monstro's final smashing into the rocks, followed by the celebration of Pinocchio's awakening. What a crock!

This release is so bad, I ended up getting rid of it, and I do not recommend that anyone pay any money for it. And the extra cues added seem to be from some children's record release from the 50's.

What a waste!

I quite agree. Also, in addition to the part you mentioned, I think the vocal on Little Wooden Head is still missing. Sadly, I have a pretty strong feeling that Cinderella will be just as incomplete.

This series isn't a total lose. We seemed to be getting the complete 90's scores which is a huge holy grail for myself at least. Yes, ther's some mastering problems even with those. But I would say 98 percent of Little Mermaid is awesome. I personally didn't notice the mixing problems with Lion King so happy to have that as well. I did prefer some of the OST versions in a few places and swapped them out. No biggy there.
