I always wonder what I would think if the 2nd one I went on (terrible, bumpy, Thompson Carib one) had been before the 1st one (glorious Norwegian Carib Cruise, top quality, no bumps).
Probably would have ended before it began.
However, apart from the 2nd one, I've had brilliant times on all of them since (seven and counting now).
I also used to think it was an 'old-timer' thing...holidays for when you got past 50 or something, but most of the ones I've been on have a real cross-section of ages and people.
I've done Norwegian, Thompson, Royal Caribbean and Carnival so far, with a Holland America one planned next week (for my 50th) around Canada and New England.
I like the variety of ports and stops, the food, services and entertainmment on offer...just the whole shebang really.
I guess I've turned into a Cruise-a-holic.
Any others here share my LOVE BOAT passion? wink

Are you going with Saga, Kev? They'll be in your ear 24 hours a day for the rest of your life...

This time a year ago, I'd have said cruises were for old foggies and that I couldn't see the appeal.

However, my partner and her daughter absolutely rave about them and so, to convert me, they treated me to a mini cruise in the Royal Carribean's Independence of the Seas last year. It was only four days but it was brilliant and ai loved every second of it.

The ship was so huge and luxurious, I could hardly believe it. And the food was just amazing in every one of the many restaurants on board.

So, I am a total convert and we have just booked a 2 week cruise for next September.

Aye Mike, Royal Caribbean is the line I've been on most.
I've done the Independence, plus the Freedom and Oasis (and I'm going to New York in October from Southampton on their new Anthem of the Seas ship).
There's nowt better than having a game of togger (football) at the back of the ship. Surreal.
I have plans to see what P&O and Cunard are like in the future.

And har bloody har TG smile

I mainly travel on cruise holidays. I like the fact I can unpack and not live out of a suitcase. I like seeing various ports. Sometimes I wish we could stay in a place longer than a day, but the convenience of cruises wins me over.

Royal Caribbean is a good line. I like smaller ships like Azamara and Oceania.

My favorite line is Seabourn. Smaller ships (400 passengers) that can go places the big ships can't. The accommodations, food and service are impeccable. No waiting in line for everything. The up-front fares are steep, but they are all inclusive. No tipping expected and no signing of charge slips every time you have a drink, etc. When you factor this in, the fares are actually reasonable. A few years ago we did a 74-day circumnavigation of S. America. Amazing cruise and the time flew by. We didn't want to get off! Since then we've done a 60-day trip from LA to Australia and back to LA, and we just got back from a transatlantic crossing from Florida to Rome. We're hooked.

I was on a weekend cruise just two weeks ago, from Oslo to Copenhagen and back again (celebrating several of my friends' 40th birthdays). But no, I don't generally really like 'em. First of all because I get easily seasick. Second, because ferries have always been means of transportation to me. My family owns a summer house in Denmark, and throughout my childhood and adult years, it's always been a matter of getting there and to make time pass while you're on the ferry. So I've never been able to properly enjoy the ferry or cruise ship trip itself. Not really my kind of holiday.

But I've never been on long cruises to the Caribbean or with those gigantic ships that are mostly produced in my country, for whatever reason.

Didn't we have someone on the forum who went on a Kiss cruise?

Like Thor, I also get seasick easily and I also view it as a means of transportation rather than a destination on itself. I wouldn't mind spending the night on one of those party boats in Cannes, but a stay on a cruise right now is not really on the horizon.

I bet you're one of those people who complain about the slightest little thing... smile

It'd be fantastic to go on a cruise around the fjords - it's a sort of ambition that I don't suppose will ever happen. If we do spend the requisite money on a cruise it'll doubtless be somewhere warm - which is okay, except it's not conducive to watching the end of a glacier plunging into the ocean.

For those of you who cringe at the POSEIDON clip, here's a clip from a REAL-LIFE wave situation onboard a cruise ship. Yikes!

LOL. Yeah I know, how dare I expect an upright ship. wink

Seriously it is starting to become a crap shoot. There's that liner that went aground in Europe and some ppl died. The liner that lost power just off shore and people were stranded with no power for days. I had a friend who was stuck on a ship just outside of port for 24 hours because of excessive fog. Ugh!

Edit: Thor thanks to your video I will never ever go on a cruise ship! eek

I've been on over 50 cruises, and I just got off the Quantum of the Seas (Royal) on May 2.

At least while I am still working, cruising is the only way to truly get away from the stress of the office.

My favorite line is Celebrity, and my favorite port is Bermuda.
