I've never seen the film before and found it listed at Netflix. Most reviewers there praised the film, Peter O'Toole, etc. but nearly everyone said the film is 'un-watchable' because of the blurry transfer and that it was a 'small box image' in the middle of your tv screen, and that Chinese subtitles could not be removed. Sounds dreadful, and why Netflix would continue to rent these is beyond me. AMAZON is (selling) a different looking copy for around $10.00 but it's not Blu ray and it's hard to determine if there's actually any difference in the versions as the cover doesn't look all that 'professional', and it's labeled as 'Combat Classics'.
So folks, is the Amazon version worth spending the money on if I haven't seen the film? Or, is it also a blurry mess? Thanks for your help / input!

Twilight time is soon issuing a limited edition bluray. I am sure that it will look excellent.

The "Combat Classics" line was an official series of Columbia Pictures war film DVDs. According to the reviews on Amazon, that version, which was issued in April 2011, has a fine picture. Earlier dated reviews that cite lousy picture quality are for some other version, (maybe even a bootleg disc).

In 2013, Columbia combined THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS with three other "Combat Classics" releases (ANZIO, THE WAR LOVER, HELLCATS OF THE NAVY) into a 4-film, 2-disc bargain package, that currently sells for the same price as the individual disc. However, putting two films on a single disc may somewhat compromise image quality.

THANK YOU both, Gentlemen. It's good to know the film will be coming out on Blu ray soon (or sometime) at least. Also, it's good to know that the image in The Columbia release of 'Combat Classics' is a GOOD transfer and not a boot. I think I'll call Netflix to find out EXACTLY which film they're still issuing as a rental,'the boot', (why would Netflix knowingly rent a boot?) or the newer Columbia 'Combat Classics'? Thanks again!
