Anyone else watching the beautifully made new BBC 1 fantasy series yet? It's fantastic! Great cast, wonderful period detail. Pretty perfect. And readers of the book are comparing it well as a faithful adaptation.

Less Harry Potter for grown ups, more a fantasy Jane Austen! But it does look gorgeous. The amount of cgi is small but beautifully formed. It it's place as it should be. In fact the two occasions now where it has been used has been nothing short of spectacular, but as I say, in it's place and not saturating the piece.

This is a genuine drama firing on all the right cylinders. Writing, acting, wonderful direction, and incredible sfx when needed to tell what is becoming a cracking story.

The dialogue alone sparkles. "The only thing he was able to make disappear was the claret!"

And of course, with seven episodes to one novel very little will be left out, and I'm sure we can expect a nice dirty, great soundtrack album to go with it.

Oh, and the first episode was filmed 40 mins walk from were I live.

Yeah paul, saw this advertised and caught last half. Know nothing about it so Was a bit baffled by who is supposed to be who. And what.
I like the guy who was Ray Donovans brother - i think hes a good actor, so it probably bodes well.

Could do with a run down of the first episode and what its about so i can pick up episode two.
Any idea if episode 1 is re-run this week?

Yes, as those above said, it will be easily available to all. I just wanted to give the heads up here, because I happen to think this is pretty awesome. And was totally amazed that no one has mentioned it so far on here. All the detail and fun of Game of Thrones without the frankly annoying in-your-face 'adult' stuff. Same great casting too.

But like GoT it has it's own mythology and slightly alternative British history in the respect that magic is known about and accepted. But listen, Bill, if I can get the hang of it in one or two episodes NO ONE has a problem!

But I really do think a soundtrack will also be talked about eventually too.

It was mentioned in the 'What are you watching?' thread.

It's based on a book, which I haven't read. The thing is, in the hands of a master writer, the 'real' history of alchemy at that time could include a helluva lot more in terms of actual alchemical symbolism and sequences included within the structure of the plot and the art design. Maybe the book does that? If the likes of Kubrick and Coppola can do this in a hidden way, then an overt treatment should be possible. It could've been great.

Nonetheless, it's good fun, and primarily comedic. I wouldn't compare it in any way to GoT, a different animal entirely.
