WEDNESDAY, MAY 27

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN---20th Century Fox franchise remake underway of the 2003 comic book-based movie that starred Sean Connery in his last movie. The movie had Victorian Age superheroes Alan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, invisible man Rodney Skinner, Secret Service agent Tom Sawyer and Dorian Gray taking on evil Professor Moriarity.

JONNY QUEST---Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) will direct the live-action movie based on the animated series that ran on ABC from 1964-1965. Tim Matheson provided the voice for Jonny on the tv series.

IT---New Line Cinema has shelved the movie project based on the Stephen King novel after director Cary Fukunaga left over a budget dispute.

CHiPs---Vincent D'Onofrio (LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT) is in negotiations to play the villain, an ex-cop who leads a car-theft ring, in the movie based on the cop series that ran on NBC from 1977-1983. Dax Shepard (PARENTHOOD) and Michael Pena (FURY) will play the California highway patrol motorcycle cops that were originally played by Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada.

SUPERGIRL---photo released of Melissa Benoist starring in the CBS pilot.

STAR TREK---Liu Dejian, head of China's NetDragon Websoft, is a big STAR TREK fan and had its headquarters built to resemble the starship Enterprise. However, other Trekkies claim it looks more like the starship Voyager.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE---director Bryan Singer hinted Caliban is in the sequel.

GOTHAM---two DC Comics villains will be introduced in Season 2. The male villain is described as "intelligent, cultured and highly articulate, extremely attractive, both seductive and threatening”. The female villain is in her mid- to late 20s and "a sexy knock-out".

DAREDEVIL---two novice actresses, Shiva Kalaiselvan and Louisa Mignone, have auditioned for a role believed to be Elektra for Season 2.

THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR---Lifetime pilot underway based on the caveman novel. The 1986 movie based on the novel starred Darryl Hannah.

CASSIUS & CLAY---Lifetime animated pilot about two female bandits in a post-apocalyptic America. Voices are by Lake Bell, Kaitlin Olson, Susan Sarandon, Jeffrey Tambor and Robert Patrick.

GRACE AND FRANKIE---Netflix renewed the series.

I saw that on Google Earth once.
It does look more like Voyager.
An upside-down Voyager. Heh.

Or CHIPS.

I know, let's make a film about two cops on motorbikes.

Who'd see that? How would we market it?

How about remaking a previously successful TV series? At least there's a marketing angle to latch on to.

I think it's a good idea. These are the films they should re-make, films that should have worked, but didn't. The first one is a bit of a guilty pleasure movie of mine...in a collection stuffed with guilty pleasures.

The only thing remotely impressive about Robert Rodriguez is that he still manages to get studios to fund his movies.

This sort of did the Avengers movie thing way before the Avengers movie thing. I liked the novelty of it at its time and kinda like the first two thirds along with the score. Call it a guilty pleasure.

CHiPs ran until 1983? I didn't know that. Maybe 1981, tops. Learning that reminds me of the incredulity that followed the knowledge that One Day at a Time ran until 1984 and Alice until 1985 (and without Flo!).

Jonny Quest better be tongue-in-cheek as hell or it'll be an unintentional joke. Ben Stiller as Race Bannon, anyone? Julia Louis-Dreyfus could pop in as Jade. Michael Fassbender could play Dr. Quest, the ultimate straight man in the farce. Ken Watanabe could be a great Dr. Zin. I don't know enough kid actors to mentally cast Jonny and Hadji.

CHiPs ran from '77-'83.

You can see an episode every evening on MeTV. I revisited most of the series (I missed a few episodes) this way, without spending a dime. The first three seasons (or '77-'80) are solid television. It didn't lack for babes, and there were plenty, so the show never becomes an outright sausage fest. The hottest regular female cast member was Brianne Leary ("Cahill") who was gone after one season and replaced by Randi Oakes.

The show went into the crapper quickly in the '80s, thanks to Estrada's contractual disputes and other problems (probably mostly due to Erik). When Wilcox left, that was it. And when you thought it couldn't get any worse, the final season had a completely revamped cast, with no explanation as to why the other officers were absent. ("Just go with it!")

They also used several episodes for back door pilot attempts, which failed miserably, like Fred Hunter's ninja cop team, called Force Seven. Thank God that never happened, and he went on to Hunter, instead.

Why tongue-in-cheek? Outside of the antics with the dog, the series was pretty serious. Especially for a 1960's cartoon, prime-time series or not. I'll take a good, rollicking adventure based on the series. Ben Stiller as Race Bannon? No thanks.
