I just received the new CD from Disques Cinemusique of the amazing 1996 French thriller L'Appartement, with music composed by Peter Chase. Ever since I discovered L'Appartment about a decade ago it has been one of my favorite films of the last two decades. It was naturally remade in the US to much less effect (what else is new) as Wicker Park. The director, whose first film it was, has done almost nothing since, which is quite odd given the assurance of his film and the fact that it was very successful. I have wanted the score from the day I heard it. I tried finding contact information for Mr. Chase, to no avail and kept trying over the years. Earlier this year I found he had a website and the score was on it to hear. So, I wrote him via the website but to no response. But then I got the news that it was finally coming on CD and that's all I really cared about, and now, in a limited edition of only 500 it's here. And it's great. Sound is excellent and the score is just wonderful, either on its own (if you haven't seen the film, which you should) or as a remembrance of the way it functions in the film. I cannot recommend this highly enough.
