I like Dwayne Johnson. The guy has charisma and I enjoy seeing him onscreen.

But this is maybe the worst movie news in some time. An absolutely awful idea. The movie can be an acquired taste, but it was and is unique and to a degree, iconic.

If Johnson stays true to the original and plays Burton as a blow hard doofus, it may be fun. But given studio brain trusts, the odds of that are small.

Hollywood, please kiss my ass big grin As David Lo Pan says "this really pisses me off to no end!" big grin

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to Star in ‘Big Trouble in Little China’ Remake

By Jeff Sneider

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in negotiations to star in and produce a remake of John Carpenter‘s cult classic Big Trouble in Little China that will be written by X-Men: First Class scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.

A representative for 20th Century Fox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Johnson is making a deal to play Jack Burton, an all-American trucker who gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in San Francisco’s Chinatown

I can't agree more. One of the movies I'd like most to be left alone will be remade into a pale echo of its former, better self, just like Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog and The Thing (and yes, I mean Carpenter's, specifically).

I totally agree. A film like this only works once. It's just so unique with just the right cast.

Let's break this down... things that made the original great: 1) John Carpenter, 2) Kurt Russel, 3) James Hong, 4) score by John Carpenter.

Remake: None of these factors are returning.

Why bother?

Much like a RoboCop remake, what's the point? You can't improve on it.

Indeed. WHY bother?
It is so much fun to watch Kurt Russell having a ball in Carpenter's films. Watching his take on Elvis, his send-up of Clint Eastwood in Escape From New York and The Thing, and then his John Wayne caricature in Big Trouble….

The people who are remaking this movie DO NOT understand what makes it great!

And one more important ingredient, Fred. The wonderfully, odd, off-kilter humor of W.D. Richter's script. The new screenwriter will have a really hard time duplicating that.

Everytime a JC remake is announced, I'm reminded he likes to have cheques landing in his hand for doing zilch, so I couldn't care less to be honest.

They do need to use the song again given the 80s are cool again:

Actually, nowadays I'm happy for *ANY* new Hollywood mainstream movie that *ISN'T* yet another Marvel Universe adaptation.

You are right.

The Hollywood guys are unrelentingly unoriginal these days. It seems like the suits have the writer teams searching through the old catalog to make a reboot/remake list. This is probably far from over. Much of the reboot, remake, sequelization is pillaging the 80's.

I even find the Indiana Jones reboot depressing. I know people want it to happen, but I think they should leave it alone.

What they don't get is the spontaneity that makes the original a classic. It's like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. Of course we know the solution today will be to add a ton of CGI and call it a day. And BTW, the film was a box office failure if I remember correctly. It reached cult status when it hit cable television and home video.

Dwayne Johnson reportedly wants John Carpenter to direct. Get W.D, Richter, too, and I'll be very interested. smile

A few days ago I read a follow up article about the proposed project, with some mention that it was the new writer's "new take" on the film that got the studio excited.

Their take? Umm, just like, dust off Richter's screenplay and go from there. Whenever there's a "new take", bad news usually follows razz

I wish I understood why people get upset over remakes.

Awhile ago, I started a thread about the plethora of Hollywood redos in recent years.
I made the point that NONE of them become hits, and the ORIGINAL films are the ones that fans
continue to enjoy.

These redos are done because they are cheap and/or the studio already owns the rights.

So, do not fret my sons

Anyone know if this "thing" is still happening? I'm finally just getting around to watching the Blu-ray of the original (because of the CD release thread on the other side). Except for watching it one night on satellite while eating Chinese a decade ago, I haven't seen it in its full Panavision since its original release. This movie is so '80s. I remember that it was a bomb. Watching it again now, it's really not that good, but kind of goofy fun that I wish was funnier because you can't take it seriously.

I know I'd find nothing funny about a Dwayne Johnson version, even if he sported a mellet. Be nice if it died in development hell -- because it would probably be hell to watch.

I too lament the remake mindset of many, BUT I must offer up the defense of the mindset, and lay responsibility at the proper feet. Stage is responsible for this... blame Shakespeare. Stories are retold and reinterpretted all the time on Broadway or at The Vic... so I cannot stand and naysay the intent, really.

Sort of.
