Here's one absolutely hilarious sketch on the Carol Burnett Show. Comedy has become so coarse and vulgar these days but this skit is proof that it's possible to make people laugh without resorting to that!

Here's another one by Red Skelton which originally appeared in a film, but he did use it on TV too:

Perhaps some of you know of some other examples of hilarious TV comedy from the past!

Funny! I found things far more hilarious growing up. The performers just had my gut hurting and tears in my eyes. The comedy would stick with me for hours or days and just thinking about it would make me laugh again. I do like some modern shows, some a lot, but it doesn't resonate quite like it used too.

Always loved Rodney Dangerfield's "I get no respect" routine, e.g.:

His brand of humor was, maybe, the link between the more innocuous style of yesteryear and today's non-stop profanities.

The current lowest common denominator show in US (IMO) is "Two Broke Girls" - non-stop vulgar humor, a horrendous laughtrack and just plain not funny-unless you're an 8th grade boy.

That was funny, especially about the slot machines!!

Here's another favourite comedian:

And the incomparable Nichols and May:

I hated when Rodney Dangerfield used swears.
I don't care what the intent behind it was.
Anyone who used swears should rot.

You know what I never get enough of?
That Clem Kadiddlehopper/Freddie The Freeloader stuff.
Man, that hobo/beggar/homeless stuff is the bees knees.

Octoberman, I too loved all of those Red Skelton characters that you mentioned. I'd add to your list his Gertrude and Heathcliff skits.

I owe you an apology, Joan.
My comment was in reference to a series of very tactless and inappropriate comments Regie made in the Joan Rivers RIP thread and, in error, I used the "smilie" instead of the "winkie".
Therefore the ironic aspect of my remark was misinterpreted.
So, I'm sorry to you for that.

As Joan Rivers has been dead for some time now I presume it's safe to say she had a trench mouth. And she wasn't funny, just coarse and vulgar. She was just playing to an audience which completely lacked sophistication, and she knew it.

It's too bad that you didn't display such a sensitive insight on that thread when you had the opportunity.
I don't think you would know anything about the sophistication level of any audience from that era.
Your verbiage style would indicate that you were born long after that.
In fact, it's safer to say that the way you Pearl-Harbored that RIP thread demonstrates your level of sophistication pretty efficiently.

I like how Carol got even with Tim for his elephant story. His unexpected reaction at 6:50 is great:

The entire Chuckles the Clown episode. No need to mention the show. LOL just thinking about it!

Joan Rivers didn't have a trench mouth, she had a mouth that looked like the front end of a Buick Roadmaster!

I think the lady in pink wants to punch out Andy Kaufman.
Funny though.

Octoberman is right Regie. Like her or loathe her, relentlessly dumping on Rivers rip thread wasnt your finest hour.
