I'd like some recommendations please for Exotic film scores.

I'm not sure how open to interpretation that word is to some people, so I've provided a list below of the scores I own that I've placed in this category.

I'm not looking for things that are Oriental, Indian, Native American, Spanish, Middle Eastern, etc., as I've already put those scores that I own under those respective categories.

I guess tropical might be another useful descriptive word. Rainforest. Tribal beats/rhythms. Maybe some vocals or chanting. Natural sounds. In the wild. etc.

It can be a full-on exotic score, or just have subtle embellishments to provide that effect.

If I find you're struggling, then later on I'll see if I can come up with any further ways of more specifically describing the sound I'm after. I'm hoping to avoid any ambiguity, such as that seen in the recent "Seascape" thread. The music has to have exotic components in its sound, rather than just being, for example, a traditional orchestral score for a film that happens to be set in an exotic location but doesn't convey that when listening to the music in isolation.

Examples:

Apocalypto - James Horner
Before The Rains - Mark Kilian
Discover The Gift - Carlos Jose Alvarez
Grey Owl - George Fenton (a bit borderline, as the film is Native American themed)
Instinct - Danny Elfman
Kathmandu: A Mirror In The Sky - Pascal Gaigne
Kon-Tiki - Johan Soderqvist
Medicine Man - Jerry Goldsmith
The New World - James Horner
Oceano - Ennio Morricone
Passion - Peter Gabriel
The Passion Of The Christ - John Debney
Sanctum - David Hirschfelder

E.g., Heitor Villa-Lobos' FOREST OF THE AMAZON_

http://www.amazon.com/Villa-Lobos-Forest-Amazon-Heitor/dp/B00005B16V

It is a concert work, but based on the music Villa-Lobos composed for MGM's The Green Mansions. Villa-Lobos didn't quite understand how film scoring in Hollywood works, so he wrote a complete score on the basis of the script even BEFORE he arrived in Hollywood. Bronislau Kaper adapted Villa-Lobos's material.

Also, by the same composer, "The Discovery of Brazil" - music he wrote for a series of documentary features:

I wonder if The Mission with its grand score by Morricone would fit your criteria? Maybe that is too obvious.

I would suggest Farewell To The King by Basil Poledouris.

(If you like exotic music with EXOTIC dancers, go for Magic Mike. wink) (Just couldn't resist.)

The old Varese album The Emerald Forest would be a good choice, but out of print and a little pricey - under $25 at Amazon.

Limited E2's Villa Lobos choices are excellent, and here's one more centrally exotic, that I found out about on an earlier thread here:

Mission is good, hadn't occurred to me because I think of the oboe solo primarily when I think of that score for some reason.

Here's an out-of-left-field choice, not a soundtrack, that seems to me to fall in the same category as some of these -
Mask by Vangelis.

And another Native American choice that is just excellent and off-the-wall at the same time: Rosenman's Man Called Horse.

How about Avatar from James Horner?

Horner's Where the River Runs Black and Vibes are quite exotic, but it all depends on your tolerance for electronics. They're pretty relaxing and almost hypnotic. Not his best work, but certainly worth looking into.

Some of these prior threads may offer suitable recommendations. (FSM’er OnyaBirri is our resident expert on the “Exotica” sound – perfected by Les Baxter).

A couple more I want to point out, two by Elmer Bernstein: Zulu Dawn and Kings of the Sun. The latter only available in the Bernstein box. (Zulu Dawn has some British military marches etc., but I find the choral work representing the Zulus to be among the most fascinating ever done.)

EDIT: Actually both Kings of the Sun and Zulu Dawn are available digitally (found them on Spotify), so easy to have a listen to see if there's anything there that's on the nose. And I know neither are tropical - probably going too wide afield, but these are great and worth a mention!

Cannot recommend enough the 2 CD set of Bora Bora from Quartet for this. Both scores are terrific for this vibe but the Piccioni in particular is incredibly transporting. You can feel the warm air and hear the waves washing in nearby.

The first one in my mind is QUEST FOR FIRE (Sarde) with its several interludes of drumming and tuned percussion.

Second up: PLANET OF THE APES.

Granted these are not "tropical" from start to finish. That's a tall order.

(Aside: I was saddened to note that WHITE WITCH DOCTOR was not more tropical-sounding.)

Rosenthal's ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU comes close, in my recollection.

A tiny bit of a very diverse and exotic score and one of my very favourites...

Rosenthal's ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU comes close, in my recollection.

Better than "close", really, since there's some primitive-sounding uses of double basses, jungle-sounding whistle-flute-thingies, and "drums along the Limpopo" sounds.

I commend this choice albeit I'm not so taken with the Les Baxter-US alternative score.

Thor won this set in a little competition we had when he was here for his West Coast USA visit :-)
