Hi, I am a longtime lurker and reader of this board. I enjoy mostly the music of Herrmann, Desplat, Morricone, Korngold and Delerue. I really like re-recordings of very old scores, especially Herrmann & Korngold which seem well served in that regards.

However, I always wondered why there are so few re-recordings of Delerue? For example the music for "Le Mepris/Camille", one of the most iconic theme of the 20th century, only exists in that same old mono recording, I have searched everywhere and the only "new" version I can find is by Desplat's Traffic Quintet (great job).

Delerue wrote some truly amazing themes, yet his music is never heard in the concert hall or recorded (unlike Korngold, Williams, Herrmann, etc), does anyone know WHY? Are the scores missing?

Imagine Le Mepris/Camille recorded by a world class symphony or chamber orchestra...It seems such a no-brainer, yet no-one has done it, not even the specialists in re-recordings (unless I am wrong).

Varese has done some Delerue rerecordings over the years, although I'm not sure about LE MEPRIS.

It's probably because of the very limited market...we are lucky to even get original releases (we have yet to have a Delerue release this year).

The original soundtrack of many of the early Delerue works is not even yet released. Universal France give us a few tracks at a time. Also many of his earlier works are not really of the "orchestral" type. Quite a few of theme even have a jazz/rock sound. I wouldn't want to hear a new recording of that. I'd rather have earlier "Golden Age" score re-recordings from Auric, Jaubert, etc.

Most Delerue scores that are available on albums are in decent sound already.

Delerue himself did some nice re-recordings released as The London Sessions.

Quincy Jones re-recorded a theme by Delerue. Re-named it, too. wink

Don't forget John Williams for one of his themes in HOOK.

The closest we've come to Delerue re-recordings in recent years was a series of CDs by Disques CinéMusique where they re-created the scores using a combination of acoustic instruments and synthesizers. There was A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH (2004), before Intrada came out with the actual tracks in 2007. And RAPTURE/INTERLUDE was issued in 2005, before Intrada came out with the actual tracks for RAPTURE in 2011. Others were a compilation of Delerue's music for the films of Jack Clayton (2005) and ones titled "The Unpublished Film Music Of Georges Delerue" (Vol. 1 in 2004; Vol. 2 in 2005). These recreations were arranged by Robert Lafond.

I also see that Disques CinéMusique has made several old Delerue 45s/EPs available as downloads in the past month, undoubtedly sourced from vinyl.

Those examples of re-recordings mentioned above were done about 10 years ago, but as we've seen, Intrada subsequently issued the originals.

Now that the likes of Intrada et al have made significant inroads into the film studio archives, coupled with the advances in restoration technology, is it feasible that some of those other labels are wary of producing re-recordings in case the originals surface?

We've seen a few occasions where Tadlow have delayed their re-recordings when the originals have come out first. They could have cancelled and picked different scores to re-record, but they didn't, and just delayed theirs.

Just wondering...

Disques Cinematique also made at least two discs of chamber music arrangements, as well as some flute and guitar arrangements as part of an otherwise 'classical' Delerue disc.
Not true rerecordings in the sense being referred to here, but no less worthwhile.

Camille from Le Mepris was recorded for Milan Records in the late 80s by Laurent Petitgirard, conducting the
"Orchestre Symphonique de Radio Tele Luxembourg"; it was part of a 25 mn Suite cinematographique including L'insoumis, Day of the Dolphin, Julia, Day for Night.

In 2007, The Traffic Quintet recorded a great CD of music from the french new wave, including Le Mepris

Actually I would be curious if anyone could name another French composer with MORE re-recorded scores than Delerue.

Auric? Jarre? Honegger?

I'm not claiming that they do, but I'm wondering if they might.

You can't compare Delerue to Auric and Honegger: They were both members of the important Les Six, and thus, influential concert composers (Honegger more so than Auric). They wrote classical music, and THAT is getting more re-recordings, not their film music (again, Honegger's more than Auric's).

Not too much film score recordings for either of them though anyway.

Not too much, perhaps, but not so little, either. There's four Marco Polo albums of Auric's film music under the baton of Adriano, and one on Chandos conducted by Gamba. The Silva Ealing film music album conducted by Kenneth Alwyn has selections from three of Auric's scores. Whether any of his albums released concurrent with the films - like BONJOUR TRISTESSE or GOODBYE AGAIN - were re-recordings I don't know, but the main theme to MOULIN ROUGE must surely be one of the most-covered film themes of all time.

Honegger has at least four albums of film music on Marco Polo, again under Adriano. There's also an album of his film music on a label called Solstice, conducted by Henri Vachey, and lengthy selections from REGAIN and MERMOZ can be found on two other albums in my collection.

All in all, not too bad compared to some composers (even Aaron Copland!), but still lagging behind Delerue I see now.

I had no idea there were four of each on Marco Polo....I figured there was one, maybe two.
