Perhaps some of Barry's "Petulia" has that coiling, smoky feel. Also the mournful solo piano music of Shire's "The Conversation." The main theme of "Taxi Driver" is beautifully in this ballpark. Try the main title for Mr. Bernstein's "Love With the Proper Stranger." Sorry if these are offbase.

For a parody of this sound, give a listen/watch to the film noir extended segment, "The Girl Hunt Ballet" from the 1953 film, "The Bandwagon," -- composed by Arthur Schwartz. It is gorgeous with some yearning brass.

Perhaps some of Barry's "Petulia" has that coiling, smoky feel. I endorse this recommendation! Most of the rest of these I was thinking of, but this one wasn't on my radar.

Everyone seems to be equating the CHINATOWN score with the main title theme. If you want another example of that, try Ray Heindorf's main theme from the film version of PETE KELLY'S BLUES. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ahlwEcYYRM Me, I associate the score mainly with the very non-tonal sections of piano string manipulation, and I know no other similar scores.
