Just watched the movie Mulholland Falls again. Great score by a composer I am not that fond of. (Grusin) What other scores are similar?

I know of:

Chinatown, LA Confidential, and Body Heat. What else is there?

Isham's "The Black Dahlia" is very much in that style. I really like it.

And it's available from some Amazon sellers for just a couple of dollars. Well worth a listen to the clips:

Ah, that 'noir' sound, yes I've been chasing that the past couple of months too.

The first ones that jump to mind are Grusin's THE YAKUZA (a terrific FSM CD),
Small's THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (Intrada, excellent!), as not being
mentioned yet. I have a stack pulled at home, but am at work, so that's no help!

Happy Trails Barryfan,
Sean

Perhaps some of Barry's "Petulia" has that coiling, smoky feel. Also the mournful solo piano music of Shire's "The Conversation." The main theme of "Taxi Driver" is beautifully in this ballpark. Try the main title for Mr. Bernstein's "Love With the Proper Stranger." Sorry if these are offbase.

Hard Contract - Alex North

You're welcome.

For a parody of this sound, give a listen/watch to the film noir extended segment, "The Girl Hunt Ballet" from the 1953 film, "The Bandwagon," -- composed by Arthur Schwartz. It is gorgeous with some yearning brass.

Jerry's score is nonpareil, but I enjoyed Marcelo Zarvos' score to "Hollywoodland," which was the same era and setting, and had a similar vibe, perhaps silkier in texture:

1. Guilty by Suspicion by James Newton Howard

2. The Last Tycoon by Maurice Jarre

3. Devil in a Blue Dress by Elmer Bernstein

I endorse this recommendation! Most of the rest of these I was thinking of, but this one wasn't on my radar.

I've long felt that Silvestri's theme from THE BODYGUARD had a CHINATOWN flavor.

Thank you, THAT was the one I play all the time I had forgotten about!!!

Great great score, so happy LLL did it justice.

Mychael Danna's WHERE THE TRUTH LIES is a nice semi-noir flavored piece
that I never see mentioned anywhere.

City Hall is kinda Chinatown-esque.

It's a video game score, but Andrew Hale's work on LA Noire is a helluva great noir score. Very influenced by Goldsmith's Chinatown, as well as others mentioned here.

Everyone seems to be equating the CHINATOWN score with the main title theme. If you want another example of that, try Ray Heindorf's main theme from the film version of PETE KELLY'S BLUES.

Me, I associate the score mainly with the very non-tonal sections of piano string manipulation, and I know no other similar scores.
