As much of a Giacchino fan as I am, I never once cracked his music for Lost. I never watched the show so I have no idea where to begin and given the sheer size of the music written, I am a bit... lost.

Wondering if anyone has playlist recommendations or best-of tracks that could get me started.

You can't go wrong with the Season One CD.
It's the beginning of everything, introduces many of the 'main-stay' themes and ends with what is still probably my all-time favourite cue from the series (Parting Words).
You will need the following series' CD's to hear all the new (brilliant) themes and development of the old ones, but Season One will help you decide if you want to continue or not.
Together with BEAUTY & THE BEAST (Holdridge/Davis etc), I consider LOST to be the BEST TV music I have ever heard.

You need to watch the show...the music will really "click" with you once you experience it in context. Plus, it was a fantastic show. smile

I am in the same boat as the OP. I found a URL (see below) that I was going to use to guide me in addition to the posts from others in this thread. Could those that have seen and heard Lost comment on the review below? I do not wish to watch the show so I need a solid sampling from the albums but likely not everything.

Lost has some of the greatest music ever for a TV show. There are actual THEMES with beautiful MELODIES. For example, each character has his/her own theme. And most of these melodies, to my delight, are fully of melancholy and emotion.

Lost was one of the best dramas on TV. Ever.

So............ I recommend all of the CDs. There are 7. One for each of the six seasons and one for the last 2 or 3 episodes.

What "barryfan" said!

However... let us not forget The Waltons!

I'm someone with all seven titles over ten discs who was a big fan of the show and returns to this music often. I probably play Season Four and The Last Episodes most of all.

Ah, the ever-useful "all 10 discs" replies. It's like someone saying, "Hey, can you recommend some of the best episodes of Star Trek? I don't have time to go through everything but would like to start to get into it," and then people start replying, "Well, there are only 70+ episodes of Star Trek and most have something good in them, so just start there, and then, well, 12 movies and then there are only almost 650 more episodes of sequels and spinoffs, and really yeah just everything!"

I own all volumes and I don't really have a favorite volume as the music is just consistently good throughout the span of the show. It would make sense to just start with the first volume as others have pointed out that is where the themes get introduced and just continue. If it's favorite cues you're looking for, I think there was a thread on that but I'm too lazy to find it in the jungle that is the search engine of FSM.

Two tracks you can't go wrong with... both Series 1 and 4 finished in style thanks to an absolutely gorgeous cue from Giacchino.

Check these out if nothing else:

Series 1 - Parting Words
&
Series 4 - There's No Place Like Home

I am in the same boat: never watched Lost. But as a fan of Giacchino, I knew I had to get the albums. Definitely start with season 1. It establishes a lot of the main themes. I also find both Season 6 albums (The Final Season & The Last Episodes) to be very very solid in material. So definitely check out Season 1 and a Season 6 album. But if you're OCD like me, you'll want to listen to 1-6 in chronological order. smile

Enjoy listening!

Never cared for this music on album.

But in context, it's one of the few Giacchino scores that I like -- a very unique soundscape that defines the universe it takes place in. Droney and experimental, yes, but very fitting.

As a big fan of the show and the music, I'll add my opinion into this thread. I think the primary albums to get would be for Season 1, Season 4 and Season 6 (both albums, if possible). Season 1 is a definite must, it has the initial versions of many of the main themes, plus that incredible "Parting Words" track. Without it, it'd be like owning the albums for the STAR WARS sequels but not the original STAR WARS movie. Season 4 has a wealth of new thematic material, emotional cues and great action tracks, plus you get themes for Ben and Desmond. Season 6 features even more new material for new characters and events and both 2-disc sets are very worthwhile.

So funny that this comes up at this time. I just finished season 1 of lost and bought all the CDs off eBay. Yes, just start with season 1 both of the show and the CD, and go from there. To me there's really only two principle and recurring "themes" in season 1, then it's complimented by excellent set pieces like Parting Words and my favorite, Hollywood and Vines.

Hollywood and Vines made me realize that he was a composer of talent. It's canonic with three voices working in counterpoint with an extra mandatory brass crescendo.

The tough part of working on TV is that you are forced to do a crescendo into every commercial break!

Well, in that case, one would be exaggerating. In the case of LOST (it also applies for Battlestar Galactica), it's true.

Recommending only a part of LOST's music would be like recommending only to watch certain scenes for a movie or a few pages from a book.

As someone else already said, I'd go with Season 4 and The Last Episodes. The regular Season 6
album is also very good.

And "There's No Place Like Home" is a nice companion piece to my favourite track (also on the season 4 disc)

"Of Mice and Ben"

I stuggle with LOST music. I recently got a CD player/storage unit called Brennan B2 (which is an amazing high end device that can store like 1000 gigs of music and sounds amazing) and I decided to load up all 10 LOST CDs. But I find LOST scores to sometimes be plodding. I would love to pare it down to a 2 hr playlist but I am indecisive as to WHAT to pick for cues. I would almost LOVE to see Varese release a GREATES HITS CD with maybe some prevously unrleased cues too.

I`ve been recommended to check out the LOST score (never watched the show) since I`m so obsessed with Christophe Beck`s score from Buffy. And I love emotional score and character/relationship themes in tv shows!

Need to catch up on this!
