It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that my dear friend Phillip Lambro died yesterday morning at Glendale Adventist Hospital. He had suffered from a stroke that he had in April and was on a feeding tube. Phillip couldn't speak anymore during the last two months of his life and had limited use of his left arm. He is survived by a brother. He was 80 years old. I'll miss him.

Sorry to hear that. At least he lived long enough to see you champion his compositions with CD releases! I'm sure that really mattered to him.

Thanks, Yavar,

He was very happy about the releases we did together, especially the rejected Chinatown score. He always asked me when I would visit him: How many CD's of Chinatown did we sell this week, Rob? He felt he had been treated badly by Robert Evans and said repeatedly that what Jerry Goldsmith composed was a "television music" score. (I don't quite agree with the latter part of that statement...)

After a long while of being known for doing the rejected "Chinatown", commented on not well by Goldsmith, was it any vindication Robin to him that after the score was released it got positive reviews and words?

I'm sorry to learn of his death, Rob, and it's a shame albeit understandable that it's become eclipsed by that of James Horner. Lambro was a passionate composer and a unique individual, and I did enjoy the opportunities you gave me to interview him, His Crypt of the Living Dead is a remarkably potent and sonically frightening film score, one of the best of its era. And his approach to Chinatown was a worthy take as well. Murph the Surf was a sunny, breezy score. Glad he had a bit of a resurgence and recognition in recent years - mostly all your doing. Thanks for bringing him out of the Crypt and into the Surf! - rdl

If ever a composer had a partnership with an aptly named record company, it would have to be Mr. Lambro and Perseverance. Within a short space of time some very few years ago, I purchased the precious few CD's of his film music, and a copy of his autobiography, and enjoyed listening to the one as much as I did reading the other. At this remove, I can't cite chapter and verse, but I seem to recall feeling that a few passages in his book betrayed a slight sense of snobbery and condescension toward the world of Hollywood music which had served him so ill. That said, I found the author's intelligence striking and his dedication to music inarguable. Between what I heard and what I read, I very much wished -- and I still do -- that there were commercially available recordings of the Lambro works which had met with such success in concert halls. I'm saddened to learn of his difficult last days and sorrowful at his passing.

I'm glad I got to know this composer's music via his excellent score for Chinatown. He will be missed.

I'm sorry to hear that he's gone. Some of his film work had real influence.

Thanks, Yavar,

In Lambro's book he called it "doleful", which I don't think is inaccurate (and I do like Goldsmith's score).
