Two pieces were written, one titled "The Fourth Horsemen", the second called "Write Your Soul" which was re-titled "Flight" for concert purposes, were available on iTunes for a while, but have since become unavailable.
The PBS special was really just a re-purposed edit of an online documentary series on the now long-defunct AirShowBuzz website.
I keep hoping they'll get a proper CD release. I have them in iTunes as "Flight Demonstration" and "The 4th Horseman" under the album title Write Your Soul and I can't recall why I'd have it different to what's mentioned above, but I guess I changed it sometime.

Before they appeared on iTunes, the music was part of a larger package available in 2010 (though the music tracks were limited to two 192k mp3s!) which featured three videos in 720p.
"Write Your Soul" was the name of the first video in which James Horner reflected on his passion for flying, and the genesis of the music.
"The Fourth Horsemen" was the second video, a montage of flight from the World Wars to the pilots who fly in tribute, set to the shorter of the two pieces of music.
"Flight Demonstration Music" (re-titled "Write Your Soul" for the iTunes music track, and "Flight" for concert use) was the larger 12-minute piece, interspersing cuts of the Horsemen's flying routines from takeoff to midair to landing, and Horner conducting his orchestra. It is this piece the Horsemen choreograph their aerobatic routine to during their performances at air shows.
By the way, I always got extremely irritated by the canards sometimes here that he adopted a 'fake' English accent. He was brought up and schooled in England, his dad was Czech and his mum Canadian and that's all there is to it.

I watched this on DVD last night (until now I'd only watched the Horner segments to be honest). It was fascinating hearing the emphasis on safety and that the pilots don't do this for fun, but to get better and even better. They put 10 hours prep in for every hour flight. It was nice to hear them speak so very well of Horner, and how to them he is "The Fourth Horseman".

Exactly. I did notice that too with Elmer. What's the deal with that Mid-Atlantic accent?
Funny, I just happened upon that "Behind the Scenes" doc while it was being posted. Very poignant indeed in retrospect. Somewhat connected with a few earlier comments, at some points - just in a look in the eye or the way he delivered a phrase - he put me in mind of Roddy McDowall.

Flight is a nice piece, but it's made up *entirely* of Horner's stock elements, there's not a fresh moment in it. Pretty, but nothing I haven't heard from him 100 times.

Phoenix deleted the post. As I recall it was a gush about how soaringly good the music was, not sure why Phoenix felt the need to retract the statement.
Well, I would love to get those pieces of music... even if it was only as mp3... Does anybody know anything about a (re-)release? I thought it would have become available as download again. I love James Horner's music.
