Pacino starred in 3 movies scored by Dave Grusin. BOBBY DEERFIELD, AND JUSTICE FOR ALL and AUTHOR! AUTHOR! Wonder what he thinks of the composer or if they ever met?

Wonder what DOG DAY AFTERNOON would be like with a Dave Grusin score?

Elmer Bernstein scored CHINESE COFFEE for Pacino. Wonder if Pacino was a big fan of Elmer's work?

Howard Shore scored the Pacino directed documentary LOOKING FOR RICHARD. Wonder how they got connected?

Patrick Doyle scored 2 Al Pacino movies. CARLITO'S WAY and DONNIE BRASCO. Did Pacino like one and recommend him for the second? Grand Central Station cue in CARLITO'S is Awesome!

What does Pacino think of the Mikis Theodorakis score to SERPICO?

Jerry Goldsmith scored CITY HALL starring Al Pacino. Wonder if Pacino knew of Goldsmith?

Would love to talk to Pacino about all of this and get his thoughts on film music in general and know his favorite scores and composers.

Hopefully one day I will get the chance.

What is your favorite score for a movie that Al Pacino starred in?

To the best of my knowledge, Shore met Pacino after Al rejected the score to Chinese Coffee.

Bernstein likely got the blame for the film not working, before Shore's score was deemed more acceptable, but the film still wasn't! I think it was released under the radar almost a decade late. Still never seen it.

Both Shore and Pacino unusually stayed in New York (given their status in the industry), which may have helped Shore land the assignment (at a guess).

I have a DVD of CHINESE COFFEE with Elmer Bernstein's score. I never heard that Shore did a score for it. But I'm sure Shore did LOOKING FOR RICHARD.

There is a third Pacino directed film, The Local Stigmatic. Perhaps it was that one where Shore replaced someone. I'm sure the Board's resident Rejected Scores expert could confirm.

Was it not the case that Elmer Bernstein replaced Howard Shore on Chinese Coffee? The DVD has an extra commentary track where Al Pacino speaks well about Bernstein, who had died not long before the film was put out as part of a DVD box set. It's definitely an Elmer Bernstein credit - nice little end title!

Your resident rejected scores guy here.

Bernstein replaced a recorded score done by Shore. Among the orchestra was also a harmonica performed by Adam Glasser, who most unfortunately shares the same name with a known male porno star. I never did find anything that stated why the score was replaced.

There are two cues credited to Shore in the closing credits in the songs section: "Better Times" and "The Apartment". The film also has an entire section for additional photography, which apparently was reshoots; I suspect the score was rejected in an effort to change the film and maybe even "Save" it.

If the closing credits of Bernstein's score are any indication of the rest of the score, a release with his score and Shore's would be most welcomed.
