Just a friendly reminder about this TCM showing that's quite rare (the last one was cancelled) and well worth checking out: My final TCM recommendation will be familiar to readers who frequent the CC site: Once again it’s Hidden Gem #10 They Won’t Believe Me, previously reviewed here http://thecinemacafe.com/the-cinema-treasure-hunter/2013/6/22/wkph1bclcvl5jxi5844tpzri2fb3wk along with some words of admiration from The Summer of Darkness’ host Eddie Muller in the comments section below. Last time the channel organized a screening, it became an understandable casualty of a late substitution for one of Eli Wallach’s films after the actor passed away. I’m sure this time it will be a go and I strongly encourage readers to partake in one of noir’s most strikingly unusual and imaginative tales. It is believed to be appearing on TCM the morning of Friday June 26, at 5am PST.
Did they run it? Was it the uncut version or the 79 minute reissue?
I caught this thread a half hour before the film began, but had time to set the DVR. I've only just now started watching it, a film I've never seen before -- so I have no idea which version it is, but I'll guess it's the uncut one. What I do now know is that right after the main titles I had to shout out "McDOUGAL!!!"
Actually, heretofore TCM has only shown the cut reissue, that's why I asked. If the titles were 1:85 "safe" then it's the reissue.
I think they showed the 80 min. version as that is the only 35 mm print that TCM has and is concurrent with their published running time. The most complete version that I am aware of is on Laser Disc from Image Entertainment and runs the full 95 minutes according to the jacket but I have not timed it. However the Laser Disc version has been taken from a 16 mm print. There is some information about various running times from Eddie Muller after my review which is linked above. (It was previously not linked properly but I just fixed it so that it takes you right to the review and comments.) Thanks for the interest in this most fascinating film!
I've managed to acquire uncut original release prints of most of RKO's edited reissues (including THE BIG SKY). The one I still have not tracked down is RACHEL AND THE STRANGER. And while I have the uncut ENCHANTED COTTAGE on video, I still haven't found it on film. Looking, looking.
