A program consisting mostly of film music will be played by the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle on Sunday, June 28th. There is live streaming of the concert. See www.digitalconcerthall.com/en/concert/20456
The program is as follows, though the notes (which contain a howler about John Williams) suggest there might also be some Bernard Herrmann on the program.
Alfred Newman 20th Century Fox Fanfare
Bronislau Kaper Mutiny on the Bounty
David Raksin Laura
Edvard Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor Lang Lang Piano
Jerome Moross The Big Country
Erich Wolfgang Korngold The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Grieg there makes no sense. They should have Lang Lang play some miniature movie piano concertos instead.
I quite agree. Still, at least Rattle has chosen his selection from the great age of film composition. I heard John Mauceri's disappointing performance in London last year, of the Bounty score shorn of the thrillingly dissonant brass descants. When one is expecting to hear this, the absence is a huge letdown. I hope Rattle, who is usually meticulous in such matters, doesn't overlook them.
