BTW, there was another author--a contemporary of Jakes'--who wrote a series of historical novels, each named after one of the states of the union. The author's name eludes me...it wasn't Jakes, was it?
As suggested by Mr. Phelps, there is a long series of novels by Dana Fuller Ross called WAGONS WEST -- it includes individual novels named after US States : WYOMING!, NEBRASKA!, OREGON! etc.

Before the Kent Family Chronicles and the North & South trilogy, Jakes wrote a series of sword and sorcery tales featuring Brak the Barbarian. He is a fine storyteller and does his research for his historical novels.

I also recommend the works of the late Allan W. Eckert (The Winning of America series) which are footnoted and take place in my neck of the woods. He also wrote a book about the court martial of Daniel Boone
