We've had Jerry and Benny at Fox. We've had Rozsa, Kaper, Raksin and Schifrin at MGM, etc.
I'd love to see Frank Skinner get his due.

A box set from the Universal vaults could contain original tracks from these richly melodic gems (which constitute but a fraction of his 240 plus scores!) would be wonderful:

When the Daltons Rode
The Wolf Man
Saboteur
Arabian Nights
The Egg and I
The Naked City
Harvey
The World in His Arms
The Man From the Alamo
Magnificent Obsession
All that Heaven Allows
Written on the Wind
Battle Hymn
My Man Godfrey (1957)
Imitation of Life (1959)
Portrait in Black
Midnight Lace
The Ugly American
Captain Newman, M.D.
Shenandoah
Madame X
Appaloosa
etc. etc. etc.

Is this doable? Is anyone listening? Do these tracks exist? Is Universal hard-nosed about the musical treasures in it's vaults?

That would be one helluva box set! The question about if it is doable has to do with 1. The costs 2. What tapes are available and their condition? and 3. How many people would buy it? You can count me in one this one.

All our specialist labels combined haven't given us a single legitimate CD of a Skinner original soundtrack.
And requests here for Skinner CDs don't seem to merit any worthwhile responses from any of them, as if the mere mention of Skinner's name is taboo.
He's become even more of an invisible man than the one he composed music for.

Even a 2-CD sampler newly recorded would be very welcome.

But Basil is right. For the moment (and we are not getting any younger), LP-to-CD transfers seem to be all we can realistically expect.

That looks ace. Lots of great scores.

The only Golden Age item that might excite me more is an Andre Previn box, but he's a bit more represented than Skinner on CD. Actually scratch that. The only Golden Age item that would definitely excite me more is a Roy Webb box. But I think Frank Skinner has about 100x better chance than THAT happening sadly...

I am big Frank Skinner fan. When Man of a Thousand Faces/Written on the Wind came out, it was an Insta-Buy.

I would buy ANY Frank Skinner CDs!

Any Skinner score listed above would be a WONDERFUL release, especially my favorite, "Portrait in Black." A box set would be spectacular of course, though I find it hard to imagine a producer going through with it.

About five years ago Douglas Fake, when asked about the possibility of a few specific Skinner scores, wrote this on an Intrada thread about Skinner:

"All the titles you mention are controlled mostly by UMG (not Universal). As you know, we work a lot with UMG. I've looked into a lot of Skinner possibilities because so many of them were originally on Decca (now UMG), especially SHENANDOAH but also including MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES, IMITATION OF LIFE, BACK STREET, MADAME X, MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION and so on. He had a lot of LPs! Anyway, at the moment there are (curiously) a lot of missing Skinner album masters."

No word that I'm aware of since, but there's been scant discussion on Skinner too so maybe some progress has been made.

I appreciate your willingness to buy such a box, DMD. May I ask you;does your employer, Varese Sarabande still have a working relationship with Universal or was THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER the end of that relationship? Many people on this board keep asking for Varese Club CD's from films made at Universal. I hope you will respond.

There are only three (rumors of a fourth) Skinner scores from the 40's that survive on acetate. As for the 50's, I would not put any money on anything surviving other than the Decca masters. And let's hope that THOSE survived the 2008 fire!

I've already nailed my colours to this mast in other posts, and would buy any Skinner scores that surfaced.

Do we know what they are? And if we'll ever see them on CD?

I suppose they are BACK STREET (1940 version), THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES and ARABIAN NIGHTS because these three have been floating around among collectors for some time.

They haven't floated in my direction. I'd like to hear them.

ARABIAN NIGHTS is the longest one and even has a duration of almost 60 minutes. Sound quality is quite acceptable considering the age and of course there is some crackling.
I don't know if any of our specialized labels will ever officially release one of these three scores. Maybe one of them could come from Intrada in their current Golden Age series as they have a working relationship with Universal?

Arabian Nights is a damn good score to a damn silly movie. I would definitely buy an official release.

Of course, it's not quite Sinbad the Sailor by Roy Webb...but it had to accompany much more silly goings-on.

Ray, do you know if any Hans Salter and Frank Skinner scores from the 1960s still survive?

I don't mean to be a naysayer, but I suspect you're right.

I'm over fifty. I was a film minor in college and then I went to film school. Needless to say, I'm a soundtrack nerd of the highest order. And yet, I have never seen a film scored by Frank Skinner.

None of which is to say that his music isn't great and worthy and should be in everybody's collection. But it doesn't surprise me that we haven't seen any Skinner. A box set seems very, very unlikely to me.
