i don't care whether or not it's orchestral, its more talent and a distinctive voice i want,
i'd say Cliff Eidelman is underused, also Dario Marianelli,
and I'd like to see more from the likes of Jonny Greenwood and Nick Cave/Warren Ellis.
but as far as emulating the old style goes, i'm not sure that's the right way to go, it kinda sounded overblown and artificial to me in Jurassic World.

I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again:

If you don't like what's going on in Hollywood (personally, I think there's plenty of stylistic diversity within Hollywood too), then look OUTSIDE the American mainstream. There's a whole bunch of fantastic composers out there -- whether it's in Norway, South Korea or France. Or take a look at the American indie scene. Great stuff there too (Johnny Jewel's LOST RIVER is a personal fav of mine this year).

I completely agree with that. My issue is not that current composers can't step up to the plate, it's that distinctiveness is generally stomped out of film music along the process. Films are factory-constructed to look a certain way, have a certain pace, and sound a certain way. Which is why composers like Shaiman, Goldenthal, and to some extent Horner before his death have sat out for the last several years.

And yes, Thor, I'm talking about mainstream American films here (not just blockbusters, though). And you're right, of course, interesting things can and do go on outside of this. But the original question was who "could lead Hollywood," and on this to-some-extent mainstream American message board, mainstream American films and their scores get the lion's share of discussion.
