Badelt resumes his collaboration with Werner Herzog (following Invincible, Rescue Dawn and the documentary Happy People) for this adaptation of the life of Gertrude Bell:

TBH if it weren't Herzog directing I would be prepared for this film to be an epic misfire, but as it is I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. And I hope Badelt manages to find the inspiration to concoct something wonderful as well.

Whoa. EXTREMELY amateurish trailer. Some shots weren't even color graded, and the aspect ratio subtly changes in some shots - Note the milky/grey extension that eats into a few shots. Plus a very bad choice of fonts. Who the hell put this trailer together? A film student? Good grief. This shouldn't have been allowed online in this state, it looks like a rough cut...

The music THIS GOOD desperately needs to be heard!
Easily his best score since K-19!

Here is a little clip from the movie featuring a tiny bit of the score...

What is with the desert wind sounds in the background? I hope that isn't going to be on any official release of the score.

Any news of a score release for this?

I just saw this film, which was rather terrible. I like Herzog in general, but he's unable to do "epic". That's not his thing at all. The film looked ugly, had pacing issues, waferthin characters and was just plain boring. Very disappointing. Badelt's score was part of the problem -- far too melodramatic and over-the-top when there was nothing in the visuals that warranted it.

That being said, the music IN ITSELF was absolutely exquisite! Kinda like a contemporary LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. So I'm very sorry to hear there was no soundtrack. There really should have been, but I'm guessing the film's abysmal critical reception had something to do with it.

I recently read a book about Gertrude Bell (very fascinating historical character....sort of a female T.E.Lawrence) and was much surprised to see this film had been produced and released quite recently. Surprised because I hadn't heard a word about it. After a little internet research, my surprise dwindled, as I soon realized that it had been so abysmally received by both audiences and critics that it didn't even get a local release in Phoenix, AZ (that I'm aware of).

The music sounds interesting but at this point it's very doubtful we will ever see the score released. The film can't even get a DVD release here in the US...there seems to be no information or release date available. It may indeed be terrible, but I sure would like a chance to judge for myself.

That was recorded overseas, wasn't it? Music Box Records has been releasing a number of scores limited to 500 units. Maybe they could handle this.

I don't know how the label profits from 500 units; I recall one label said in order to turn a profit, at least 1,000 units need to move.

I haven't seen this yet, but I wonder if it can really be as bad as they say.

It definitely has 'Lawrence' as it's template, but knowing how Herzog works, he won't just spell out what he's saying. The 'Queen of the Desert' is an archetype as old as time, Sekhmet, Kali etc.. That 'sexually self-repressing 'negative mother' complex which leads to desert-loving Englishmen as Bolt put it, was present in both men and women of that post-Victorian era. She tortures the men she attracts, not by active cruelty, but by passive, and devours what children she might rarely have, all in the name of sacrifice to high ideals.

Herzog would see that general trend as an element in what helped to bugger up modern Syrian colonialism, even though she herself is a sympathetic and revered figure to many Arabs, like Lawrence. I'm betting Werner will play this angle.

So how bad can it be? The music sounds good, but the intervals and even some figures are a clear reference to Jarre, so it's not that original, a deliberate reference.

I wouldn't say the movie is that terrible... and I actually saw it twice several years apart... it's just so boring... but hey... it's Herzog so no surprise there.

The movie is indeed terrible -- one of the worst movies I saw that year. And I like several of Herzog's films -- both old and new.

BUT the music is able to live its own life, separated from the film. And as such, it's actually an excellent score. A shame it was "wasted" on such a project.

It is an awful film. Could Varese not put out 500 copies of the CD as part of their "We Hear You Series" or as a Limited Edition?
