I love Sarde. My favourite is LE TRAIN of which I understand the 18 minutes on the Universal France release is the complete score.

High on my list would be The Tenant which has a great moody atmosphere and those eerie glass harmonica effects. I think the version on the same CD as Tess is more or less complete.

"Ghost story" is absolutely stuuuuuuuuuuuunning.

"The Manhattan project" is also beautiful. When I saw the film I had to have the soundtrack and was over the moon when it was released quite soon afterwards.
Now I'm disperately waiting for a reissue of "Ghost story".

As it was said earlier, the Train (with other Granier Deferre movies) is among his best.

Too Bad, the entire score of Clean Slate has not been released yet, only in a Tavernier compilation.

I also recommend The Princess of Montpensier, one of his last collaborations with Tavernier, especially the end credit which is a real masterpiece.

There's another one, very hard to find, Ennemis Intimes, which is extremely good, some kind of haunting concerto for piano and orchestra.

Would definitely buy a complete GHOST STORY. Brilliant, haunting score.

Pirates is a joy. if you love big orchestral swashbuckling scores with a nice line in comedy then this so much fun. The Bear is another favourite Sarde along with Music Box. Some beautiful scoring here.

I must admit I've missed out on Sarde but am going to pick up Ghost Story and The Tenant. Some really helpful recommendations in this thread. So thank you so much.

Philippe Sarde is my favourite composer.
Besides the many scores which have already been named here, I would like to add one which is in my top 3 : UN TAXI MAUVE (The purple taxi) which was Fred Astaire's second to last film (the last one was ghost story score by...well... you know who, meaning that Astaire ended his film career with Sarde). The Chieftains were hired to play on this lush, lyrical and extremely beautiful music.

I always think of Sarde as the French James Horner.
Both exploded onto the film music scene at a very young age, with an incredible grasp of symphonic ability and orchestral technique (Sarde in his 20s writing The Tenant and Horner's early, incredible scores).
Both were also not averse to stealing from the classics at regular intervals and re purposing their own material quite often.
That's how I remember things anyway.
