"I haven't listened to this in a while"

Doesn't work for me, particularly, since there's plenty I haven't heard in a while, but still enjoy once I cue them up again.

(Yesterday I heard Holdridge's EAST OF EDEN for the first time in AGES. I missed out on the cd, so the LP transfer I have is buried in among a zillion others. But I'm so glad I still have it, and listened happily.)

***

That's about the only reason I've heard.

What other criterion do you use to weed out your collection?

- I haven't listened to this in a while . . . and I wouldn't miss it if it were no longer in my collection, and it's not so impossibly rare that I couldn't re-acquire it if I change my mind
- This was a blind buy that I didn't like but never got around to getting rid of
- This is an old edition of a score that I have a newer edition of with all the original content included and with superior sound
- I only have this because I was a completist of this composer/conductor/series of releases
- I only have this because it's popularly considered an "essential" score
- I've had this for years and haven't even managed to get the shrink wrap off yet

A big one is "Hey, I ALWAYS skip this." The other is "I never listened to this much in the first place."

This has led me to realize that I don't actually like Small Soldiers or the expanded Explorers very much. (Not to pick on Mr. G. I like the original Explorers just fine.)

I have a playlist to listen to music that I haven't played in a year or two. Sometimes that's fun.

I know it's a crime, but I've sold a total of 2 CDs in my life, and both times I kept the MP3s. Muhaha!

These are really the only two cases that would apply to my collection. However, there are a handful I just never listen to anymore and whenever I try them out again I think, "Meh...I guess that's the reason why I never listen to them," but I keep them anyways because every once in awhile I do get that urge to try them out again and know I would regret having given them away. *shrugs*

Only the first three on this list for me. I probably wouldn't get rid of something that fits #4 & 5.
And I've never been in the position of #6....ever.

Those two are applicable to me.

I'm currently still going through a downsizing activity, and if I come across a CD that I'm unsure about, one of my main criteria is:

- It sounds nice enough, but am I ever going to pick this off the shelf to listen to in preference to any of the other 1000+ better CDs I've got?

- I've had this for years and haven't even managed to get the shrink wrap off yet

After finally getting round to opening some boxes recently following a spending spree from several years ago, I actually discovered quite a few wonderful gems via this method that I didn't know I had, lol.

Is the composer's first name Jerry? If yes, move to next step.

Is the composer's second name Fielding? If no, move to next step.

Are the scores called The Satan Bug or The Omen? If no, they can go!

Digital changes dialogue. Rip it and be done. Get rid of physical media. And be done.

And then you discover problems with your digital files:

Hope you kept your CDs as a backup?

Surely you wouldn't throw out your copy of Fiddler on the Roof?

Ah, of course, its conductor would be its safeguard!

Sorry: I struggled to think of another soundtrack composer named Jerry ... smile

Happy de-cluttering to everyone.

I never feel the need to downsize. There's no law saying when I need to hear a score. Some I might play once every 10-15 years. Others every couple of months. I generally buy what I know I will like. For those few disappointments, I keep, because my taste in music changes over time. 35 ago the only romance score I would ever listen too would be "Somewhere In Time". Today I routinely listen to romance scores by a variety of composers.

Right- something I didn't enjoy at first could get a re-evaluation even years later, maybe after perusing this board. And, lo, there it is on my shelf, ready to be listened to.

I've only recently sold duplicates after upgrading to a C&C/Deluxe version, but not always. Once added to the collection, it is likely to stay.

Excellent list, Mastadge. I think only #3 would apply to me.

I would also add the last trade-in I did (THE QUIET AMERICAN):
"There's only one sound/cue on here that's really interesting, and that's really not enough for me to keep it around."

Well more recently I did some weeding out of my collection when I moved most of them to my awesome new binders that hold a ton of discs and tossed the cases. That was the point to decide to sell something because once I toss the back inserts and case selling it again is less likely. At that time I encountered a few that I bought because of the hive mind suggesting it was essential but never liked all that much. Those were easy to get rid of. I never bought that many CDs anyway (film scores might total about 200) so I don't really need to toss anything unless it is something I never really care for.
