Arrow Video will add a number of new to its catalog in October. Amongst them are a box set of films by Japanese director Kiju Yoshida, Clive Barker's first three Hellraiser films, and Ulli Lommel's crime drama The Tenderness of the Wolves, amongst others.

Please note that the announcement includes upcoming UK and U.S. releases.

Hellraiser: The Scarlet Box

Stephen King was once quoted as saying: "I have seen the future of horror... his name is Clive Barker." That future became reality when, in 1987, Barker unleashed his directorial debut Hellraiser – launching a hit franchise and creating an instant horror icon in the formidable figure of Pinhead.

Barker's original Hellraiser, based on his novella The Hellbound Heart, follows Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) as she comes head-to-head with the Cenobites – demonic beings from another realm who are intent on reclaiming the soul of her deviant Uncle Frank.

Picking up immediately after the events of the original Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II finds Kirsty detained at a psychiatric institute and under the care of Phillip Channard, a doctor who abuses his position to realise his own dark aims. In Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, a reporter investigating a mysterious death at a nightclub finds herself in the way of Pinhead and the Cenobites, who plan to bring their horrifying world into our own.

Coming at a time when the genre was degenerating into self-parody, Hellraiser offered a fiercely unique vision that approached its horrors with a far greater degree of seriousness than many of its contemporaries.. Along with its sequels, the Barker-produced Hellbound and Hell on Earth, Arrow Video is proud to present some of the most terrifyingly original films in the history of horror in brand new 2K transfers.

LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS:

Great news, hopefully it will have some new Christopher Young interviews.

Just FYI this is a Region B release. Due to other rightsholders it will not be playable in USA unless you have a region-free drive.

As for the movies . . . I can't think of another series in which the execution lets down the concept so badly and so consistently. I don't think I like a single Hellraiser movie, possibly #3, but I find myself fascinated so have returned to them again and again over the years . . . only to find that I still don't like them.

I like the first two the most and might even prefer the second over the first, simply because of its outlandish nightmare visions of hell and I find it a lot more grotesque than the first one. Also, hell looks a lot more inviting than returning to that asylum lol. Needless to say Chris Young's music's alongside the 'fleshy' visuals of exposed muscle tissue and carnage is what elevates these movies to cinematic art for me. The third one has the best production values, but I don't like the American feel of it and Pinhead is basically reduced to stock slasher villain killing his victims in a creative manner much like Freddy did in the nightmare series. I associate the Hellraiser movies most with the metal craze I grew up with; they are as much part of the horror genre as the Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm street movies.

I will say the movies haven't held up as well over time and especially on blu-ray some of the effects (especially the first) now look cheesy as opposed to the VHS versions I frequently rented. On the other hand some of the make-up jobs still look amazing. In that regard, for fans this new set is a blessing; the existing print for Hellbound used for blu-ray was downright terrible and so inconsistent in quality, going from shots that looks damaged to pristine, I hope Arrow found new elements to work with.

The box should include Hellraiser IV: Bloodline. It was initially meant to end the franchise and is a far better film than the third one.

I agree, it deserves a special edition with all the deleted scenes (and perhaps even alternate cut). I have the standalone release and will just replace the trilogy on blu-ray. And I refuse to get any of the later Hellraisers (V-...) as they are straight to video turds.

Barker reportedly liked #6. ("Clive said that he thinks Hellseeker is the best one since Hellraiser II. I believe he said something like, 'Thank God, somebody finally got it.' Everyone knows how he felt about the previous sequels. It's a little bit of a sore spot between him and Dimension."" "He wanted to give us a nice blurb on the box but he couldn't for some contractual reasons.")

Going back to my theme of disappointment, it's amazing for almost every single film in this series how concepts were abandoned. When they first started extending the series, Julia, not Pinhead, was going to be the big bad! After bring back Kirsty in #6, they were going to have her return in #7 for a final confrontation with Pinhead . . . only for that idea to be shelved in favor of adapting the "Deader" screenplay into a Hellraiser flick. Over and over again there have been plans to do interesting things with the mythos, and over and over again Dimension has gone the cheap and stupid route.

With #5 and 6 it even looked like they were going in an interesting direction. 1-4 were the story of Pinhead and the Lament Configuration, and it looked like after that they would wisely make it an anthology series: exploring characters' personal hells and confrontations with cenobites. But instead of running with that concept Dimension instead chose again and again to take non-Hellraiser scripts and shoehorn Pinhead into them so that they worked on no level. What a waste of what could, over and over again, have been a gloriously interesting series.

Arrow have revealed final specs:

http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/hellraiser-the-scarlet-box-limited-edition-trilogy/

What is cool is that it incorporates the earlier docu that came out this year (Leviathan: Legacy of Hellraiser I&II) which featured Christopher Young, and the specs also list an interview with Coil whose score for the first Hellraiser got rejected.

Truly a stunning set for fans.

I like the first 3 of these. I've grown to like 2 & 3 more over the years. I think the commentary on 2 helped me appreciate it more, even though half the people in it seem not to rate it too highly. The music for the first 4 i have on CD but not the others - i really liek the score for 3 which sort of reminds me of Capricorn One here and there. The rest of the films i watched but forgot almost immediately. I can't remember which film had it, but i was taken out of it when i saw Joey from Carla Lane's TV series BREAD as a cop for one scene smile . The Leviathan documentary is really great and in-depth. Great boxed set i won't be getting due to it being region B. Bah.
