I would rather if they remained digital only rather than producing such crap as the OTHER cd....

Hhmmm ... this didn't last that long (only 2 years) ...

... 3 new CDs (2 albums, that is) from Disques Cinémusique!
Francophiles rejoice.

There is not much to rejoice about the Delerue CD which is another one of those digitally sampled, artificially sounding Robert Lafond projects. What is even worse is that apparently Disques Cinémusique could not even afford to license the rights for the original Barclay EP master of the lovely MONA, L´ÉTOILE SANS NOM from 1966. If MONA had been from the early 60s, it would of course have been public domain now in Canada (as well as in Europe) and they could have ripped it quite easily from the EP in the same way they do it all the time now with records from that time, but with 1966 this is legally not possible anymore. smile

It will be interesting to see which direction Disques Cinémusique will now take in the next few months. Will they really stop doing digital downloads because they have not been financially rewarding for them - just as GDM stopped doing them two years ago - and because not enough collectors have bought those old 60s titles as downloads? On the other hand, do they have sufficient money to correctly license anything from French or Italian music publishers or will it be much too costly for them to produce such CDs? This will be the decisive question and I am very skeptical about all of this.
The Delerue and Jaubert CDs were certainly not very expensive projects - I suppose it is just a trial at the moment - as no licensing fees had to be paid (the Jaubert recording from 1952 has of course been public domain for a long time in Canada), but what will we get in the future from Disques Cinémusique?

One of their recent digital release is "Le Fatiche di Ercole" originally from Digitmovies. This is a bit curious.

But as I can see it they were quite shrewd and took the 26 FATICHE DI ERCOLE tracks not from the Digitmovies CD, but from the old Phoenix LP from 1984. smile

Hope the new titles on cd sell well so they can help fund other future cd's sadly these new titles are of no interest to me.

Have yet to buy my first Digital download if cd's stopped getting produced guess I might think about it then ha ha

Disques Cinemusique released digital copies of Frank Skinner's scores I would have bought on cd
Magnificent Obsession / Portrait in black
Tammy and the Bachelor / Back Street

When Varese released Magnificent Obsession on cd I ordered it even though I'd have much preferred a copy which had separated the the tracks away from the suite format of two tracks of the original lp.

Filmophone released a copy of Back Street on cd I ordered a copy it turned out to be a cdr the sound quality of the recording sounded lifeless.

Another title I would have bought if it was released on CD George Duning's
3:10 To Yuma / Cowboy

Disques Cinemusique released (in digital? CD?) Skinner's PORTRAIT IN BLACK? Are you sure?

Like Stefan I'm also very curious to know how things will develop for this label in the near future. I indeed know very few people who are likely to download EPs from the 60's but who'd be on the contrary delighted to buy this stuff if it was compiled on CD. It would for instance be great to get THIERRY LA FRONDE by Jacques Loussier (which they did as download) paired with other EP's from this great composer (ROCAMBOLE, ROULETABILLE, etc) since no label is alas considering to issue the complete scores. I've therefore been wondering if this 'download only business' can be any more profitable for Ciné Musique than the 300 copy CD's they used to release. I'm afraid both activities aren't juicy enough since so many titles don't sell out nowadays, even with 300 copies only. Like Wayoutwest, I'm not interested in the two brand new CD's but look forward to possible other titles, especially French scores.

No, they digitally released MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION coupled with BACK STREET and TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR - but of course not coupled with PORTRAIT IN BLACK which has never been available at all - as you can see here in this list:

Stefan, if you go to MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION and click on PDF, you'll see PORTRAIT IN BLACK on the CD back label. It's only 3:55, so I'm guessing it's the main title and end title taken off DVD.
Well, now we know. It's a great main title to be sure. We need CDs of Frank Skinner scores never on LP before, don't think we'll ever see them though.

Thanks for the info, PFK! I had indeed totally overlooked that they had also included that short suite (certainly taken from the DVD) of PORTRAIT IN BLACK.

Yeah - nothing to literally rejoice about, I agree.
My usage of that word is intentionally ironic because an album similar to the Jaubert archival recordings (FSM's Maurice Jarre concert works) remains one of that label's poorest sellers.
Most soundtrack collectors, apparently, have little interest in/appreciation for operatic singing or music structured in 'classical' forms.

I was attempting to encourage such interest by stating 'Francophiles rejoice' because discs of film music from 1930s French-language cinema are very infrequent. If, years ago, the Marco Polo label hadn't issued CDs on film music by Honegger, Auric, Ibert. etc., then this area would be almost unrepresented on discs.
Alas, already 2 FSM members exhibit no inclination towards this type of music and/or its vintage recordings...
