If this is anything to go by James Horner had written a score for Antione Fuqua's upcoming remake of the classic based only on the script.

This from an NPR interview with Fuqua:

FUQUA: And I just found out a couple days ago his team flew out here to Baton Rouge, and they brought me all the music from "Magnificent Seven" - he had already wrote it for me based on the script.

CORNISH: Oh, my God.

FUQUA: And he did it all off the script because he wanted to surprise me. And I thought it was a gift or something. And they all came out here and they said, Antoine, James wrote the music for "Magnificent Seven" already, and it's just glorious. And that's my memory of James.

I guess they will definitely record it for the film. Hope so.

If it really exists they should record it regardless (legal issues notwithstanding). I can imagine that if Horner wrote it off the script he did it in long form so there would be many of Horner's patented extended cues. Even if it was done as a concert album it would be a most "magnificent" final tribute to the man.

Yes, but the name of the other topic is not very specific...

Yes, but the name of the other topic is not very specific...

The other thread starter was presumably going for dramatic impact!

It looks like it is official!
According to IMDB - James Horner's music will be in the new film currently in post production.
Something to look forward to this year.

From the Film Music Reporter.

Simon Franglen Scoring Antoine Fuqua’s ‘The Magnificent Seven’

Simon Franglen is currently recording his music for the upcoming The Magnificent Seven remake. The score is based on themes that late composer James Horner wrote before he passed away last summer. The movie is directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, King Arthur) and stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia Rulfo, Martin Sansmeier, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard. The film is based on the 1960 classic western of the same title, which was itself based on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and follows seven gun men in the old west who gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves. Roger Birnbaum (Rush Hour, The Vow, The Count of Monte Cristo) and Todd Black (The Pursuit of Happyness, A Knight’s Tale, The Equalizer) are producing the project. Franglen has collaborated with Horner as an arranger, score producer and synth programmer on numerous scores over the last seven year, including Avatar, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Karate Kid, Wolf Totem and The 33. He also produced the late composer’s last score for Fuqua’s Southpaw. The Magnificent Seven will be released on September 23, 2016 by Sony Pictures.

Excellent. Thank goodness somebody along the line decided to show some love and respect to the late Horner and not just hire Zimmer or Junkie XL.

Yep, I heard this same news confirmed through friendly channels... a friend of mine is friends with Horner's assistant and she told me that this was indeed the case, they were preparing Horner's themes and sketches for use in the film's final score. We still get one final Horner score - sort of! smile

Never would have expected this kind of dignity from a modern studio film. Bravo. I hope it captures some of Horner's late spirit.

So Tom, did you find out if the original comments by the director were indeed just wrongly chosen: did Horner write the score or already record (some or all) of it?

This is the best scoring related news of 2016 along with Ennio Morricone oscar.

A remarkable move to keep Horner' score.

This is great, but I'm still curious about the extent of material that Horner wrote beforehand.

Looks like Franglen is getting the main score credit with a themes by Horner style add-on.

Still, it will be cool to hear a new theme or two by Horner again.

Now, somebody bring Spectral Shimmers and his unused ROMEO & JULIET to CD.
